Hi! This is the first time I've ever posted on here, but I do read stories all the time. I now have a question! I graduate in less then 2 months! I am very intrigued with psych nursing but many hospitals near me hardly ever hire LPNs and when they do, it's usually something I'm not interested in doing. So, with that being said I'm super excited to graduate so I can apply as a PRISON lPN. What I would like to know is if any of you could give me a round about idea of pay rate, safety concerns, or just a general insight as to what prison nursing is like?! Please and thank you!!
Also, I live in PA and I would like if some of you seasoned prison nurses would share any interesting stories or personal experiences you have! Thanks again!!

Hi Tiff, congrats on finishing school. I started out in corrections as a new LPN too. I worked in county jails while I finished up my BSN so it was great experience. I got to deal with psych issues, as well as medical issues (non-compliant diabetics, hypertension, HIV/AIDS), ETOH withdrawal and even had a few pregnant inmates! It's exciting but I left because I wanted hospital experience. I just got a PRN job at a state prison so I'm looking forward to it. For pay, it will depend on your state definitely, so I suggest heading over to your the PA board and trying to see if there are any active corrections nurses there. Also, I would check and see how to apply to these types of positions. I got my first corrections job with a company called Conmed (they have been taken over by Correct Care Solutions). Some jails/prisons contract their medical & mental health services--some big ones I can think of: Wexford, MHM(I just took a position with them), Corizon, Maxim ( I see travel correction positions listed on their website often). However, you can also check the career section of your state website and you may find prison jobs listed there.
Lot's of luck! I recommend all new grads check out this field in nursing !
