hi everyone
since kaytekayte got such wonderful responses on her stats survey, i was hoping there would be a few left interested in answering a sociology question. i actually thought about faking it - but decided it would be interesting to hear some actual responses :)
question: how has television socialized you?
i know as students tv is not high on our priority list, but we have all watched from time-to-time.... so - let's hear it!
thanks in advance!!

Not very much. Most of the shows on TV are a waste of time. I watch A&E, 48 hours, Court TV, PBS, shows like that.
Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

this might be a silly and unusual response but you see, i didn't grow up in the us. i am from a foreign country and married someone from the us.
i learned a whole lot from tv about politics and how this country operates. watching tv definitely contributed to my english language development.
lot's of tv is absolute junk, like soap operas which i very much despise....but there is also alot of quality tv, for example: discovery, history court tv and health channels. tv definitely helped me to become "integrated" into this society. god bless america

Thank you for your response & honesty! It is a great perspective that I wouldn't have had - nor anyone from my family. It will definitely be a great addition to my homework response.

It has affected all our lives, even if we don't watch that much. Commercials, particularly.
Idiomatic words and phrases such as the Fonz's "A-y-y-y-" and his thumbs up are interwoven throughout our speech and daily actions.
Remember Maxwell Smart's, "Would you believe. . ."
"Come on down!" (Price Is Right)
"Beam me up, Scotty." (Star Trek)
"I can't believe I ate the whole thing."
"I'm not a doctor, I just play one on TV."
I have been hearing the word "hinky" that the lab tech on NCIS uses all over the place lately. I never heard it before and I think it's a word the producers specifically came up with.
You don't necessarily have to watch these programs to learn these things. It's just that people pick these phrases and words up and use them in their everyday language. Pretty soon everyone is using them whether they watched the TV program or not.

YOu are very welcome and good luck with your project

I watch for news and Law and Order. If needed, I could do without it.

I canceled my cable to help afford going to college. I went into withdrawal at first but now I'm fine. I can't get any reception with an antenae either. So I subscribe to CNN Pipeline. Basically for $2.99 per month I can watch CNN International channel on my computer. It's fantastic. That and I watch PBS shows on my computer thru PBS.com. Terrific.
So back to your question, how has t.v socialized me? Well, the lack of t.v. has caused me to socialize more with actual real, live people. I waste less time staring at the t.v. and I find I'm a much happier person. So lack of t.v. = more human socialization for me = less isolation = happier me.
p.s. I canceled my cell phone to save money for school too. Between no t.v. and no cell phone my friends and family thought I was insane. But it's a nice life actually. (((AMAZING)))
Thanks everyone :) I was able to finish my homework assignment and you all helped me!!
Great
