I have wanted to be a nurse ever since I can remember. I am now 27yrs old with no college at all. I have 2 kids and have decided to make my dream come true. Well I went to the community college today just expecting to sign up for classes. Well let me first say I had to take a placement test which I need 3 math and 2 english classes to get to college level. I also cannot get into the LPN program till Fall of 2007. The community college also doesnt offer Student Loans. So now I am stuck wondering how on earth to pay for all of this. I dont qualify for any financial aid. The school also doesnt except Federal Student Loans. I just dont know what to do.. I am in Bloomington Illinois and dont know of any other school that I can do this at. I guess my dreams are being crushed and I dont know where to go from here.
Sorry for the depressing post I just needed to get it off my shoulder.

A lot of times they'll tell you they have a waiting list and then a couple of weeks before the next course starts they'll call you in. That's what happened to me. I applied to LPN school, did my pre-reqs (had to complete them to get on the wait list), they told me they had 36 slots and about 200 people in line, and then two weeks before the Feb course started (I completed my pre-reqs in Dec) they called me and told me I had been accepted.
I would also be wary of any school that doesn't accept federal aid, however you can get private student loans -- same as gov in that you don't have to pay them back til 6 mths after graduation, BUT, the interest rate is high. Although you can pay them off early and avoid that to a certain extent. Wells Fargo offers them as does Charter One (American Education Service).
Don't let your dreams die! There is always a way! :)
I have GREAT news. I got a student loan paid to me through Bank One. Its all deferred untill 6months after I graduate. I am soooo excited. I plan on takin the math course and then taking the placement test again to maybe move myself up in math. I cannot believe this is happeneing. I am so darn happy its redicilous. I need the extra help with math but figure after the math fundamentals course I will learn enough to teach myself further on my own. I cannot wait to start in August gosh I sound like a gitty little school girl.. LOL I told hubby he would be sleeping with a college coed soon :chuckleI really appreciate all the wonderful posts from you guys. You are definitely a bunch of special people and dont ever forget it. I look forward to posting here often and share my troubles (as I know there will be more) and my excitement with you all...

YAY YAY YAY!!!!! :balloons: :balloons:
Ok, now listen to me . 12 years ago I started college and tried then to get into the nursing program (RN). I was told the same thing I needed to take deveopmental classes. I want you to know I just finished thoses classes yesterday. In Texas college students have to take the once TASP now THEA which contains math, reading and writting sections. All must be passed before graduating or in some places being accepted into programs. I have to hold the record for taking this test at least 15 times at 29 dollars a pop. UGGGGGG I hated this. I had to buckle down and set my mind toward getting past this. I would drop out because it was stupid and I just wanted to be a nurse. I am about to go into college algebra and cant wait to get it over. It is a major accomplishment for me... 12 years of waiting and crying. While everyone else was getting in nursing school I was wiping tears and filling out my next THEA registration form. I applied to nursing school and got in on the condition I would pass these classes and be exempt from this test ,and I did. My point here is you may be required to take these classes But dont look at it as a step backward . Embrace the experience of learning something new and consider it a open door to your future. Dont be like me drop it, take it, drop it ,take it.... You will be a nurse and you may have to take the long road but it will pay off. Be focused and determined . Good luck to you
I am so happy for you! That's awesome. Seems as though you are going to make your dreams come true!

Hi, I just wanted to say that we have 2 schools in my area that don't get into federal loans. One is a vo-tech and the other is a CC. I think it may actually be more common than one would like to think. Don't give up, you will find a school that can help you out. Don't rule out the option of traveling a few miles to do it either if you can make it work. Good luck.:)Sunny
yeah, that's the way it is here- i thought it was a state vs. fed thing. You cannot use federal student loans, such as stafford loans, at the cc I attended- there's a sign somewhere in financial aid that says the last time that was possible was in 1995.
ANYONE can get an unsubsidized Stafford loan. Trust me. I qualify and we make way too much for a subsidized one. The problem may be that the tuition is deemed too low for you to qualify for a loan. I'd bet you'd qualify at a university with higher tuition (I didn't get loans for the community college, but I did qualify for them for prereqs at NCSU, though I turned them down because I ended up not needing them).Staffords are given out by the Feds, NOT the school. Someone in the financial aid office is misinformed.
Does the school recognize Excelsior, DANTES, or CLEP exams? If they do, I'd take the College Algebra CLEP or DANTES (you can get computer software to help you with that) and the English Composition Excelsior exam. You can download free study guides from any of the applicable websites and look them over to see what's involved.
Don't give up!!! As someone else said, where there's a will, there's a way!!!
unfortunately, community colleges, at least in NC, don't participate in the stafford program....and you have to have endorsement from the college itself.
sucked for me, but it looks like the OP has the problem solved, anyway!
Souther Illinois University at Edwardsville or Carbondale will except financial aid plus there are hundreds of schoalorships for single moms don't know if you are married or not but the school has to give you info on this. Who told you community college in bloomington will not except financial aid, it isn't true.

They didnt say they wouldnt accept financial aid they dont accept federal student loans. My husband makes too much for us to qualify for financial aid. But hopefully I have it figured out as I got a loan through Bank One and its a private student loan. I should be getting my disbursement date within the next 24-48 hours. I hope its soon my classes I signed up for have to be paid by Monday so it will be close. I dont understand that either as classes dont start untill August 18. Hopefully if I dont make the deadline I will still be able to get some in the times I need them.
