So, how many of you have had MRSA

Published

I had a sore throat for a couple of weeks and went in to see a doctor to get an antibiotic. Culture came back as MRSA. So how big of a deal is it and do I need to tell the charge or manager? I'm a bit discusted over it as I've supposedly been working in the MRSA "free" rooms but we did have a patient that developed it that I had been working with. Also my wife is pregnant so do I need to be worried?

Yes, I recently tested positive for MRSA on a wound. In addition, the doctor prescribed me POWERFUL doses of Clindamycin 300mgs Q6H and Sulfamethoxazole BID which caused me to develop a CDiff infection. So, I finished my last antibiotic dose last night, I am still suffering the effects of the disruption to my normal flora. Yes, I have the best of both worlds, lol! MRSA and CDIFF! All i need now is VRE, TB, SARS, and Ebola.:bugeyes::bugeyes:

I feel your pain. (sort of!!)

With my MRSA I was on Clinda and Levaquin - my intestines were messed up for a good month staight afterwards.

I lived on chocolate milk, yo-baby yogurt (everything else made me gag due to peices in it), jello, and broth. It was a great diet for a month! On days that I felt ok, I had steamed carrots and rice. Yum..

My c-diff tests were negative, but it honestly took me 2-3 months before I had somewhat of a good appetite, and probably another 2-3 before I even felt like my old self. Phenergan was my best friend on the road to recovery..

It was bad..

I hope you feel better soon, I completely understand how much it sucks..

I immediately went on heavy duty pro-biodics during my MRSA treatment with two abx's and was spared the misery of c-diff/intestinal problems. I've seen too many patients with it.

I have seen the abb I&Ds in several posts can someone explain what it means? Also is it really that easy to tell by looking at a sore if it is MRSA or should every sore be tested? I have had a lot of patients who have MRSA. Thanks.

Keep in mind the MRSA being passed around in the hospital is usually different what we are picking up in the community. I'm pretty sure the community is fast becoming full of it. I have two sons who are athletes who have been treated for boils that responded very quickly to bactrim. This was the sign that it was community acquired MRSA without doing a culture. If it had been MRSA that I brought home from the critical care unit I work on I don't think bactrim would have worked. We have decolonized the family with bactriban, hibaclens and bleaching the house.

YOu are correct from what I am reading. If you got MRSA from the unit, you would probably need vancomycin. Community MRSA doesnt. But I am also reading despite that it doesnt need the Big Guns like vancomycin, alot of the community MRSA is worse. Strange.
