They're not just small adults. Different systems are also immature especially when it comes to handling drugs. You'll use your calculator more, too. Nutrition is stressed more. In NICU, the night shift figures out how many mls/Kg the baby received, how many calories/Kg s/he got, and how much urine/k/hr. (Adult units do the urine thing, too.) The child is expected to grow even tho they are sick. 1st problem on every pts list is "Well Child Care". Immunizations up to date? Dentition?

A LOT more detail!!

And taking care of the family is like having a whole 'nuther pt. But the child will do better if mom and dad are there.

really peds was my easiest rotation. we had 4 nursing schools in my town. my nursing school and another found this rotation very easy. the other 2 nursing schools found it difficult. it was a cake walk compared to my clinicals at my home hospital. also we were not allowed to pass meds, only to know about the meds. i am also a ped rn and love it.

ive done 15 yrs of peds and love it. also i guess its just being able to talk to kids. let them know it will hurt and they can scream if they want to and hopefully have their parents with them. providing them with support and being with them. i worked many a shift with toddlers in little red wagons at the nursing station. just today i was talking to my ped since she needed abx. the augmentin pills are big and could she swallow them, my question to her can you swallow a skittles? yes so she was put on augmentin pills. i love peds. the kids try and listen. you just need to thinik at their level.

in peds you have to be compassionate and at times firm. i had a 3 year old cussing holy heck to the previous shift. i told her if she talked to me that way she would sit on her bed all night. did not hear a cuss word out of her. also you have to be able to detach at the same time. i had a child who had to get eye drops after getting poked in the eye with a tail of a plastic toy. they thought he would lose his eye. well he ended up keeping his vision. they came back to me later and thanked me. i had to give those eye drops with him screaming and me saying i know it hurts but we need to do this so you can see, after i got done i would give him a big hug.

Im nervous:) We are on a general med/surg floor and our instructor said to expect to see a lot of CSF patients. I had orientation last tuesday and I liked the atmosphere alot! There is a long list of things we cannot do there. We can pass some meds but no IV push or anything like that...(thank goodness, that would make me even more nervous)....
