on smoking...

why is it that some health care professionals still smoke when they know for a fact (i think it is expected from them) that it harms their health?

both my parents smoked in the house during my growing-up years; as a result, i suffered from thyroid disease and frequent colds while in their care. the cyanide, found in secondhand smoke, severely messes with proper thyroid function. secondhand smoke causes the immune system of children to 'fall asleep', making kids more susceptible to illness.

it is fine with me if adults choose to smoke, but they need to do the unselfish deed of refraining from lighting up inside the home and car in the presence of children who do not have any say in the issue.

i agree very much so. i think it is horrible when they smoke around young children. more so because i was one of those young children. i am glad to say it discouraged me from smoking. i never want to do that to myself or anyone around me.

I completely agree with the previous posts...if you wanna kill yourself and smoke, by all means lite up....I have smoked for 20 years, but I do it outside. My four kids don't need to inhale my second hand cigarrette smoke. I don't smoke in my house, my car, or anywhere else that may be confined.

What always amazes me is the folks who do smoke and have no regard for other folks who don't. I was standing in a line at the fair one time and the guy behind me was smoking. I asked him if he would put out the cigarette, and you would have thought I insulted his mother. He proceeded to tell me what I could do and where I could do it....and the funny thing is I am a smoker.... I was just trying to shield my kids. - we left that line....

Unfortunately, we don't always do what is best for us....I am working on becoming a non-smoker soon......:p

Why target healthcare professionals? It's not as if we hold the closely guarded secret that cigarettes are *gasp* BAD FOR YOU... :uhoh3:

Every smoker out there knows it's bad for them.

Good luck out there.

I HOLD THE SECRET, AND I'M NOT TELLIN'.

It is easy to go into denial about one's personal bad habits. I have a bad habit of drinking Coca-Cola and Pepsi, though I am fully aware that diabetes strongly runs in my family. Smokers are fully aware that their habit is dangerous to their health, yet they continue to smoke. Addiction is an uphill battle where only a few people come out on top.

I KNOW! ICE CREAM CONES ARE BAD FOR ME, I KNOW I SHOULDN'T EAT ANOTHER ONE RIGHT NOW. BUT, GOD, I WANT ONE. SO, I'M GONNA EAT IT.

Why do we assume that everyone who smokes is because they are addicted to it? :)

Because that is almost the case.

Nurses are human too. I smoke, I wish I could quit and I have been trying. So far I have not been successful.

In our facility, we have to clock out for a 30 minute meal break and then and ONLY then are we allowed to smoke... wayyyyyyy down by the helicopter pad. Heaven help us if that sucker lands while we're out there lol. No one has a problem with that but the latest memo states that our fifteen minute breaks are paid, therefore they belong to the company therefore smoking is PROHIBITED and offenders will be severely reprimanded. Hmmmm well it's not like we actually get said breaks. Ten minutes TOTAL per shift maybe but all at once??? Ain't happening. But what bugs me is that the corporation has the gall to dictate what will and will not be done during the rare intervals we may get. So does this mean that next they'll go after obese employees and tell them that eating is not allowed on company time? Sigh, who knows.

There is a difference between habit and addiction, isn't there?

Polls reveal that 70 percent of current smokers want to kick the habit, yet they cannot because they're addicted to the nicotine.
