smokers and coughing

Why do people who smoke say they can't get over their cold....don't they have a clue that smoking and a chronic cough often go hand in hand?

Honestly I understand smoking addiction and understand someone who smokes and can't, or doesn't really feel the need to, quit. Smokers don't bother me at all.

But I do roll my eyes when they are coughing and say something like, "I just can't get over this darn cold!"

My Sweet Petunia is a home health PT and loves it. A long time ago she talked me into trying home health one time and I didn't last but a few months...I hated it and ran as fast as I could back to kidlet nursing. Anyway...I don't even remember why I was see this old dude but he would constantly cough and...smoke a cigarette...take a hit off his albuterol inhaler...smoke a cigarette...take a hit off his albuterol inhaler...repeat; an amazing thing to watch.

First full disclosure here. I am a smoker. But gee whiz, nothing like going to the casino which is full of smokers since that's about the only public building smoking is allowed in nowadays and seeing ton's of people puffing away with their O2 on. Cripes that gives me the willies every time! I sure hope I have the good sense to never do that.

I quit smoking once for a few years. Then restarted. Got that cough. Decided that I'd smoke "natural" cigarettes with no additives. Cough stuck. Decided *maybe* it was the cigarettes. :D Thankfully quit again. Been like 15+ years, so hopefully it stuck this time. That cough was annoying.
