sleepless... and working only one day a week.

Nurses LPN/LVN

Published

I got hired after trying for almost one year as an LPN at a LTC:yeah:. Initially i was hired for the weekends night. so i said to myself atleast i will get two days in a week WHICH is a start for someone with no expereince( I am a new grad):nurse:. after orientation i was told i will be oncall/perdiem and on schdule for one day a week since the night shift already had too many people(overhired???:uhoh3:). I was okay with that too but here is the thing i am only getting THAT one day of the week. there are zero calls otherwise not to mention the anticipation of call early morning, the anxiety of checking phone for missed calls from work, having the uniform ready/ironed, not going anywhere in case i get a call from work(can you tell i really need more working hours and dont want to miss any extra work day coming towards me) etc etc... HERe is my question should i just toughen it out and stay untill there is a full time job opening and work just one day a week(which is not enough to pay the bills:crying2:) or should i start looking for a full time job somewhere else. is it too soon?? its only been three weeks after full time orientation of three weeks. please help and give some advise...I think this oncall thing is more stressfull than working full time:mad:. Helpppppp.......

You should absolutely be looking for something else, either full time or another part time gig. It's always worked out better for me to find something when I already had a job. Don't know why, just always worked that way. Good luck...:smokin:

You're not getting paid to be on call 6 days a week. The above poster is absolutely correct. It usually works out better when you already have a job, because you're more relaxed, not as much at stake, you're trying to improve yourself instead of desperately trying to survive. Go job hunting. Best wishes.

I had a job experience similiar to yours years ago. I was hired to do part time prn work at a LTC. I went and took the one week of full time orientation training in November. They said they would probably call me to do 2-3 days a week to work prn for them.:uhoh3:

They only called me on these 3 days-Thanksgiving Day, Christmas and New Year's eve. That's it!!!! I never heard from them again.

Don't stress it! Don't revolve your life around the possibility that they might call. I've had to turn down work b/c I had already made plans. If you can, you can, if you can't then you can't. I shared my per diem experiences with you on your other thread =) But definitely keep looking for work. Alongside my per diem work, I kept looking for additional full and part time positions. This past week I got called for an interview for a full-time position and I start orientation on Monday :D. It definitely helped that I had that per diem experience. The DON said she liked the fact that I'm still new enough to not have picked up years of bad habits, and is therefore easily trainable, but have had enough experience to know what questions to ask to have an effective orientation... since I know how med passes and the basics work, I can focus more on learning the paperwork and the being in charge part of being a charge nurse =P. I still plan on keeping my per diem work though, it's not like they call often enough nowadays to mess up my schedule anyway.
