SJSU Fall 2017

Published

Hi Everyone!

While I was wandering through the school section of allnurses, I was surprised to discover that a thread for the Fall 2017 program has yet to be posted. Well, there is only one way to remedy this sad situation. We gotta get this thing rollin'

I thought it might be fun to get to know each other a bit, seeing as we could have some classes together in September. We could also offer encouragement through the long and arduous wait for our acceptance letters. In addition to those things, a few people (myself included) might be interested to see how the applicant pool is going to treat us this time around.

I'm 10% nervous and 90% excited. Wait! Is it the other way around? Gah!

Big 5 GPA- 3.85

TEAS - 93.3%

Impaction Score- 6.96

Good luck! We got this!

Hey guys sorry for the late response:( To answer your questions about clubs and groups, there are a few clubs in our program. We have South Bay Assembly of Nursing (SBAN) , California Nursing Student's Association (CNSA), Public health Nursing Club (PHNC), Assembly of Nurse Scholars (ANS), and our fraternity Alpha Tau Delta (ATD). I am a member of CNSA and may join ATD this fall. These groups host and attend different events relating to health or nursing in any kind of way on campus or out in the community. I believe all clubs require attendance of at least one club meeting and one volunteer event OR two of either category. However ATD, does require you to be a little bit more involved but they do have great events. Any group is great honestly you just have to find one that suits you :) you may also join as many clubs as you would like. You will be bombarded with information about these groups at your new student workshop, hence why I won't go into detail about them lol. I can only speak on behalf of CNSA since I am a member and I think it is a great option because it is a statewide club so it is well known ( good for resumes!).

And Beatrix.P, CNA as for your question... I have told people that this first semester challenged me BUT I didn't feel defeated by it. I really think that's the best way of putting it. I really had no idea what to expect going in, people will tell you that it is going to be SOOO hard and it IS hard but I promise you, you will make it through the semester. Patho is usually the most difficult class for people BUT I do know that most of my cohort thought pharmacology was a little harder than patho. I found pharmacology to be super easy and I struggled with patho a little (ended with an A in pharm & B in patho). Take a sigh of relief when I say that professional role development is a complete joke! But it is boring :( As for skills it really teaches you to not be shy even if you are working with the mannequins. Especially when you do check offs with the instructors. Skills is fun and will be the class where you will meet your program-long friends. Believe me. Skills is always fun and it always feels great to walk around campus on your navy scrubs ;) Simulations can be a little intimidating but you will see that everyone will make a mistake and it will be ok if you make one too. It is a good experience. Skills tests are the hardest compared to any other class because these are the tests we've been warned about having all correct answers but we have to pick the answer that is MORE correct. So we will definitely have to think like nurses! But do not panic, we are taught very well during the semester and most timed we are able to make educated guesses.

Trust me when I say you guys will get through it just fine! You guys will be very proud of yourselves by the end of it.

Oops - this may sound silly but I made a mistake about the person who made the group. It was one of the guys in our cohort, my apologies! Just wanted to correct that and give credit where it's due!

Hey rnlab, do you know anything about recording lectures? A bunch of people recommend it, do the professors allow it? Have any expressly prohibited recording?

Yes teachers do allow you to record lectures. I will say that the only class you might really need to record is patho because thare is a lot of information. Pharmacology tests are EXACTLY like the lecture guides so you can easily just learn/memorize the info from those. You wont need to record in PRD whatsoever. And as for skills it just depends on your instructor and how they teach. My instructor was definitely more hands on and didn't really formally lecture too much. But it all depends in your personal learning style! :)

Ok cool :) thanks for getting back to me so quickly!

Thanks again for taking the time to answer us, rnlab!

HoneyBadgerDont, have you gotten multiple invites to different SJSU nursing FB groups?

Specializes in Critical Care.

Only one group, but the page as well. I think the guy who created the page sent the invites more than once too. Have you? Are people joining them?

Yes, I've gotten email invites to two separate groups from two different people, plus the invite to the page that was set up. The first group that was set up (by the guy) has 39 members, and the second group has 23 members. Weird!

HoneyBadgerDont, I need to make 2 more comments on AN before they will let me respond to your PM. Almost cool enough.:geek: Anyway, I sent you a friend request on FB. Talk to you soon.:D

Make sure you guys add the SJSU Nursing Student Group also, btw :)
