SJRCC (Orange Park/Palatka) Information

U.S.A. Florida

Hi I am currently enrolled at FSCJ and I will hopefully be applying to a nursing program in Fall 2010. I have looked at the requirements at SJRCC to apply to the nursing program and they are somewhat similar to FSCJ but as everyone knows they give priority to Duval and Nassau counties and I live in O. P. I see that May of 2010 is the last time that they will accept scores from the NET testing and then begin to accept scores for the HESI testing. Has anyone taken the HESI? I also see that there is a course called Professions of Caring which I guess is a class that is not required but may be informative about different health care careers. Is this a class offered online or is it on campus? Has anyone taken this class? Would you say that most of the nursing applicants have taken this class before applying? Also how many students do they take a sememster? Are the applicants accepted based on the number of students that graduated from the previous class? I would like to know if anyone has any insight about the SJRCC program. Please and Thank You for all the information that you are able to provide. :D

I just finished A&PI at sjrcc and Im enrolled to start at FSCJ next month to take A&PII, Microbiology and College Algebra. I loved SJRCC and had an all around good experience. The last I heard they have about 350 applicants and accept about 160ish, the cutoff is about 135 as far as points go and like 3.6 as far as gpa. Professions of caring is like a pre-nursing course that they give you 5 extra points for if you make at least a B. It can be taken on site or online. They will also give you 10 points for being a resident of clay, st johns or I believe baker county (I may be mistaken) You also get 5 points for having your CNA an 1 point for every pre-req you took there (up to 9 pts.) They will give you up to 12 pts for taking Chemistry and up to 16 for college algebra although starting in 2010, chem will be required. I will be applying to both in august. I think I have a better chance with fscj, just because I live in Duval, I didnt take all my pre-reqs at st johns, I didnt take professions of caring either.....but it cant hurt to apply!:) SJRCC is having people take the HESI now, and FSCJ has us take the PSB-NAT. I just ordered a study book and I will be taking it soon. One con of ST Johns is that it takes 18 months whereas FSCJ is only 15 or 16 I believe, and FSCJ has a night/weekend program which st johns doesn't, and they have more hospital to choose from. If you have anymore questions please let me know and I will be happy to help. When are you thinking of applying? What do you have left to take? Talk to you soon!:) -K.C.

Just finished taking the Professions in Caring course with SJRCC and I would definitely recommend it to anyone interested in the healthcare field. Aside from earning 5 pts towards your total points for passing with a "B" or better, the course provided a wealth of information as it covered many aspects of healthcare. The course can be taking onsite or online. I opted to take it online and it was not an easy "A" I had to work for it but I really enjoyed learning the course material and working on the assignments. Once you complete the course, you will have formed a sound decision on which healthcare career field you are better suited for.

SJRCC only has only 36 seats available each enrollment period. Not sure why on earth they won't expand their student intake or even offer an evening/weekend program as many other surrounding institutions already have in place. Good luck with FSCJ!

Is it 36? Now that you mention it, I think I do remember hearing that. I have heard 36 and 160. hmmm....I agree, they should expand their program! I don't know why they dont!

Thank you so much for your information. I only have AP2 to take and I am going to take Hum 2210- Humanities foundation. I see that FSCJ and SJRCC take both that Humanites course so that is why I am taking that one instead of one I am really interested in.

NurseU thanks for the information. I am going to look in trying to speak with and advisor at SJRCC. I know so little about the school but may have a better chance of getting in there because of the county issue. Do you have a lot of your pre reqs done?

Do they take Humanites 2020 too? I think they do. Thats the one I took

I think they do but I really would like to take World Religion because it seems that it would be SOOOO interesting. Hey, you gotta do what ya gotta do. I will get through it though. Are those the only courses you have to take (AP2, Micro, and College Algebra)

Yep thats it:D I just found out that I got a B in API lecture and an A in the lab, so that gives me only 13 points instead of 16. Im really scared that the B is going to come back and hurt me. Im taking AP2 hybid next semester. Have you taken a hybid? If so, is it hard? So are you going to apply for fall of '10?

That is wonderful. I am sure you will do fine when you apply. I have not taken a Hybrid course but I know someone who did and they loved it however it was for English and not a Science course. I am very much a hands on person I don't even like to really take online courses. Yes, I hopefully will be applying to the Fall 2010 period. I hope hope I get in. I am praying fingers and eyes crossed.:lol2:

Hi Futurenursenesha, I do have all my prereqs done for SJRCC but i'm still undecided if I want to attend this college, mainly because I want to enroll in an evening/weekend program. But, at the same time, i'll still trying to keep up with their new requirements just in case I can eventually afford to quit my job and not work while in college. I'm strongly considering DSC and although i'll have over an hour drive (i'm in Palatka), they do offer an evening program. They also don't consider what county you reside in for selection purposes- so this college may be worthwhile for you to look into as well.

I hope so! Im taking AP2 hybrid in the spring and I heard it is a little harder. I usually dont like online classes either, but my hubby is going to school full time too and we have 2 kids so Im trying to cut back on the time I have to be at school. Im a little nervous about it! I will have my fingers crossed for you too. I'm going to be taking the NAT soon. Did you say you had taken that or not?
