Simulations in nursing education-need some feedback

Published

hey all- I am post BSN and currently in an MSN program. this semester we are studying the role of simulation in nursing education.

if any of you have specific experience with a recent simulation, I could happily use your feedback. my main question is this- how did you feel about the sim and what is the biggest advantage to using simulations vs biggest disadvantage?

I REALLY appreciate this. we have an entire assignment based on this alone, so quick feedback is really appreciated. THANK YOU bunches.

hey all- i'm post BSN and currently in an MSN program. this semester my class is focusing on the role of simulation in nursing education.

if you have experience with a recent simulation, I could use some feedback ASAP. specifically, what did you like, what do you think the advantages are, the disadvantages and how do you think it can positively impact nursing education.

I really appreciate this!

Before we started our OB rotation we spent a few days in sim lab. It was helpful to practice skills on newborns that weren't as breakable for people who weren't used to handling infants. It also gave us an opportunity to practice infant vitals with various settings on the sim dummies and feel a fundus on a sim dummy. There were awhole bunch of other stations, everything from checking cervical dilation to diaper changing and baby baths. I think over all it was a worthwhile experience because it gave us a chance to work through some kinks and learning curves without embarrassing ourselves and making new parents uncomfortable. Of course it wasn't identical to the "real thing" but it was a great learning tool.

My area has a brand new sim lab and I taught ACLS there a couple of weeks ago. Phenomenol!!!!

Advantage: You absolutely, positively CANNOT kill anyone

Disadvantage: Every jack last mannekin is UGLY - esp. the babies

For the most part I LOVE simulations; however, the quality of the simulation is greatly effected by the person running the group. In my school, we have two people who run the labs and simulations. The first lady, is kind and patient, but she tends to be very passive, and does not engage us in critical thinking. She also is a talker, so if we are in a group of 8 students and we are each running our own simulations, if we have a question, it can take her 5-10 minutes to get over to you to answer the question. On the other hand the other guy who runs sumilations is AMAZING. He will have us work with the "Sim-man" (very expensive mannequin who has BP, respirations). This teacher will take the time to set up the cameras in the sim-man room (so the classmates can watch from the other room and critique and ask questions) he will utilize critical thinking, and challenge us.

Moral of the story, the better the instructor, the better the simulation expericene. Eager nursing students can only take the experince so far.

You're getting the same response from me that I'd give an undergraduate student: What have you thought of or found in your research so far? We don't do your homework for you; taking a de facto opinion poll on an internet board is not research.
