Simmons University School of Nursing FNP online program

Information on requirements for Simmons University FNP program. Nursing Students NP Students Article

Updated:

Here is some information I found about Simmons from my research:

The only states not approved are North Carolina, Tennessee, New York, and Delaware - but they are actively working with these states to gain state board approval.

The campus-based program has a 100% pass rate on the certification exam, this year is the first year they have offered the online program so no pass rate from that yet given, although the courses are taught by some of the same professors who teach the in-person courses.

Set up is the same as Georgetown University (they utilize the same online program for their school with the weekly courses live online, and the pre-recorded lectures and videos to watch on your own time)

18 months full time, 14wk terms with 2-3 wk break between each term, ONE campus visit required for skills assessment. 24mo part time, everything else the same as full time.

Admission Requirements:

The Nursing@Simmons application requires applicants to have or submit the following:

Bachelor's degree from a U.S. Department of Education and NLNAC or CCNE- accredited institution.

Current U.S. Registered Nurse (R.N.) license, and have successfully completed (83 or better) a three-credit course in statistics and health assessment.

Current resume.

One- to two-page personal statement that describes your academic interests, your relevant clinical experience, and your reasons for pursuing a Master of Science in Nursing.

Transcript(s) of your academic record (see below).

The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), if your native language is not English. The School of Nursing and Health Sciences TOEFL code is 3761.

The General Test of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is not required, but if you feel GRE scores will strengthen your application, please contact an Admissions Counselor at 855-461-SIMM (855-461-7466).

3 Letters of Recommendation From:

A clinical supervisor or nurse manager who has direct knowledge of your work in the clinical setting.

A professor, faculty member, or academic advisor who can provide a meaningful assessment of your academic record.

A practicing clinical nursing professional who has served as a mentor.

Nursing@Simmons tuition is $1,385 per credit hour for students starting in the 2018-2019 academic year. (Tuition increasing in 2020 to $1,410.) Students will complete a total of 48 credit hours. A moderate increase in tuition should be expected each academic year. Tuition includes simulations, assessments, technology platform licensing and support. Tuition does not include the cost of books and a $100 student fee per term.

Personal Notes

They have been the NICEST admissions reps, not overly pushy, and very thorough with helping me get all my information incorrectly. I applied to Georgetown first, and they too were nice, but since submitting my app, I can't seem to get anyone to reply to me and I still do not have a decision yet. The University of Cincinnati is not good about getting back to you via phone but do usually get a response within 2-3 days to my questions. Of the three I'm honestly now more impressed with Simmons than any of the others, so I'm hoping in the next couple of weeks to get an acceptance. I really wanted GU, but Simmons is almost $40K cheaper for the same type of set up.

Hope this helps some others with their lists of schools they want to go to! ?

Congratulations, Oskeyt!!!:-) How long did it take once they had your entire admissions packet? I'm waiting to hear. The admissions counselor said it would be after Thanksgiving before I hear. So here I anxiously wait. Are you having to rely on student loans? I will. The tuition has been the biggest negative factor for me but I think it will be worth it. Just praying I get accepted...

Specializes in Intensive Care Unit.

My packet was complete on Nov 6th and I was contacted about my acceptance on Nov 20th. So exactly two weeks. I probably got lucky on the timing ( getting it done before the holiday). Good luck you should hear soon. Yes I am also utilizing financial aid. I just prayed for you as well!

Thank you for your positive thoughts. Will take any I can get right now. Gosh, I hope I find out sooner than later. :-)

The tuition is expensive, but it will be worth it, every bit of it. I pray you all will get accepted. I have a friend who attended Georgetown and I did not see much difference at all. They use the same technology platform with similar course design.

On a side note, I would rather spend 57,000 USD for a good education rather than donating them to attorneys defend myself against malpractice lawsuit because I was not properly educated and trained....

Congratulations!! Now get yourself ready for hell... Im at Week 10 of Advanced Health Assessment and I cant wait to get it over with. I learnt so much from the course but my wife noticed I have more grey hairs now...

Specializes in Geriatrics/family medicine.

good luck everyone

Is this program possible for a staff nurse working 3, 12 hour random shifts a week. It looks like you have assigned class times. I could never commit to a tuesday class for instance as each week I work different days; I couldn't commit to any specific day for that matter as each week I have different days off. I was excited to apply here, but I guess this is not possible for a staff nurse? My job does not allow me to not schedule myself certain days of the week. I just work 3 random days.

If your manager can't work with you on scheduling then it may not work out. At my job I can make my schedule but they change it if they have to. My employer as most in CA is very pro education so they will make accommodation for students. I would talk to your manager and to the admission counselor before counting yourself out. God speed.

I was in a similar situation when I started my NP program. My unit believed they should be priority #1. They would not ensure I had off the one day each week I had class. They said they would try to accommodate but would never guarantee because the unit came first. I quit my job to do my NP program.

I know others who have employers who were accommodating. I really think the employer can make or break it for people.

No this program will NOT work for you if you can not either have specific days of work assigned or a flexible schedule. It just is not possible. There are MANY other NP programs around. Do some research and see what they offer, board pass rates, tuition costs, preceptor placements etc. Make a list of your requirements and how you can fit school into your life. Right now I work M-F 830am-5pm from home as a Nurse Case Manager...I can use my 1hr lunch break to watch the pre-recorded videos and/or write papers/do assignments etc. I take my live classes in the evenings...I'm in term 3 and so far have been able to keep my classes on M, Tue and Thurs late evenings 9pm-11pm or 8p-10p and one I had to take 630p-830p because it wasn't offered any later. There are some Sat/Sun classes but those dont work for me because of my 3 kids and husband and work schedule.

Once I start clinicals this summer I will no longer be able to work M-F and will need a set schedule of 3 12's per week. I am already talking to the local hospice about a PRN or FT position where I can work those types of hours. For me these sacrifices are worth it due to my pay increasing significantly after graduation. Each person must decide on their own what will or will not work for them.

Good luck!

Hi Tashs,

I'm applying to Simmons for March. I wanted to know how the program was going?

Specializes in Medical-Surgical, Hemodialysis.

Thank you all for the great information. Wow! I'm going to talk to an advisor from Simmons on Monday. I'm early in this process and I'm sitting on a cumulative GPA of 2.968 for my BSN and well hopefully that won't bite me in the behind and they will take other things into account.
