Simmons University School of Nursing FNP online program

Information on requirements for Simmons University FNP program. Nursing Students NP Students Article

Updated:

Here is some information I found about Simmons from my research:

The only states not approved are North Carolina, Tennessee, New York, and Delaware - but they are actively working with these states to gain state board approval.

The campus-based program has a 100% pass rate on the certification exam, this year is the first year they have offered the online program so no pass rate from that yet given, although the courses are taught by some of the same professors who teach the in-person courses.

Set up is the same as Georgetown University (they utilize the same online program for their school with the weekly courses live online, and the pre-recorded lectures and videos to watch on your own time)

18 months full time, 14wk terms with 2-3 wk break between each term, ONE campus visit required for skills assessment. 24mo part time, everything else the same as full time.

Admission Requirements:

The Nursing@Simmons application requires applicants to have or submit the following:

Bachelor's degree from a U.S. Department of Education and NLNAC or CCNE- accredited institution.

Current U.S. Registered Nurse (R.N.) license, and have successfully completed (83 or better) a three-credit course in statistics and health assessment.

Current resume.

One- to two-page personal statement that describes your academic interests, your relevant clinical experience, and your reasons for pursuing a Master of Science in Nursing.

Transcript(s) of your academic record (see below).

The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), if your native language is not English. The School of Nursing and Health Sciences TOEFL code is 3761.

The General Test of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is not required, but if you feel GRE scores will strengthen your application, please contact an Admissions Counselor at 855-461-SIMM (855-461-7466).

3 Letters of Recommendation From:

A clinical supervisor or nurse manager who has direct knowledge of your work in the clinical setting.

A professor, faculty member, or academic advisor who can provide a meaningful assessment of your academic record.

A practicing clinical nursing professional who has served as a mentor.

Personal Notes

They have been the NICEST admissions reps, not overly pushy, and very thorough with helping me get all my information incorrectly. I applied to Georgetown first, and they too were nice, but since submitting my app, I can't seem to get anyone to reply to me and I still do not have a decision yet. The University of Cincinnati is not good about getting back to you via phone but do usually get a response within 2-3 days to my questions. Of the three I'm honestly now more impressed with Simmons than any of the others, so I'm hoping in the next couple of weeks to get an acceptance. I really wanted GU, but Simmons is almost $40K cheaper for the same type of set up.

Hope this helps some others with their lists of schools they want to go to! ?

Hello,

Just wanted to share my experience / timeline with the Simmons application process. I applied for the September cohort 2015. My completed application was done by January 13, 2015. I received an email February 2, 2015 that my application was now up for review to the faculty. I received my acceptance letter February 17, 2015. So good luck to everyone.

I'm finishing my third term at Simmons this week! Incredible program! I originally applied to GU but the applicant pool had such high GPA;s that My 3.8 wasn't high enough, they referred me to Simmons. I called Simmons, they pulled my app & references, I had to email unofficial transcripts so they could make a determination while waiting on my certified transcripts to arrive...I am in the 3rd cohort and attending part-time. It took less than 30 days from applying to get an acceptance letter. =) Good luck to you all! =)

Hello,

I was just accepted to the nursing@simmons program pending my completion of the bio bridge course with grade 83 or better. I was wondering if anyone on here has completed that course and if so, how was it? My deposit is due prior to starting the bio bridge course so I wanted to see what others thought of it. Thanks!

Hello,

I just accepted to Simmons FNP program under the same conditions. I think it's crazy because we are only given partial admission, the course cost is out of pocket, and with a later pending start date! I loved my enrollment specialist but I will chose a different school.

Hi Emilyyas and Nhayden24,

Do you mind sharing with us why they asked you to take the bio bridge course before starting? How long is the course? Does it delay your start from March 2015 to the Sept 2015 cohort?

Thank you kindly!

I believe it's either if you have been out of school for more than 5 years or you have a low grade in bio from undergrad. I have been out of school for 7 years. It's an 8 week course, it's $2,400, you must get an 83 or better to continue on to the rest of the FNP program. I was given the option to start the bio bridge in March and then FNP program in May, however I deferred since I just started a new job this past weekend so that I can take Bio Bridge in May and start FNP program in September.

Thanks Emilyyas! Was it general bio that you had taken or A&P? I have been out of school for 5 years ago; A&P more recent.

I think A&P, so you should be good as long as you got a decent grade (A or B)

My friend had to take it as she was in the same predicament as you. She really enjoyed the class and said it helped her tremendously with advanced patho during term one. I wish I would have had to take it as I struggled in patho event though I had taken bio 2.5yrs prior. She is now in pharm 1 and understanding the application of medication in ways I struggled with was well. (I'm one term ahead of her). She pulled A's in those classes while I pulled B's. And she would tell you it was because of that bio bridge class.

I will finish my 3rd semester at Simmons in 2 weeks and I attend full-time. I also completed my first clinical rotations for Women's Health and Adult's Health at 2 clinics where I live. I can tell you that I'm very satisfied with how Simmons comes up with a clinical placement team and they helped me tremendously with securing a clinical site. I had to complete 112 hours for Women's Health and 112 hours for Adult's Health. I learn through practice so I spent 2-3 days a week, 8-10 hours/day for clinical rotation. It is definitely tiring because I work, study, doing clinical rotations, and my wife is 32-week pregnant. But thanks to Simmons, and also my classmates who are so kind to do study group every 2 weeks, I have been able to catch up to my readings.

Im currently in the military reserve as well, and I would recommend Simmons to all the veterans out there or family members of veterans because Simmons take care of their students. I attended Hunter College for my BSN, and I can tell from my own experience that Simmons College is at another level (education quality, student support). The only disadvantage of Simmons is that it is a small private college, so tuition is high.

I just found out I was accepted into the FNP program! I'm so excited and thrilled to begin the next step of my career!

Tammie,

what would you like to know? I started full time for the first term, but due to finances with my family and my family situation i had to drop down to part time (honestly glad i did, FT course work took up soooooo much time and energy for me I don't think I could have continued at that pace with 3 kids and a disabled hubby)...I'm almost finished with term 2 (4 more weeks..yeah!) and still doing well. It's quite a bit of work, but I have enjoyed the program thus far. Let me know if you have any specific questions.

Tasha

Hi there - when you say quite a bit of work...is it writing/research work or studying work?
