How to keep RN License Active while Working from Home

Hi,

I've been a nurse for 11 years, thinking about working from home as a Clinical Documentation Specialist, since i have young ones i would like to spend more time at home. (I've been a CDI for 5 years now.) I live in California, and the CA BRN website only gives me info on renewing my RN license (30 hours of CEUs). I don't see any info on how to keep a license active i.e. minimum hours of work, required to keep RN license "active" in California. Can I keep my RN license active just by doing my CEUs? Any helpful hints or info on how many hours I need to maintain "active" status, if i need more than just the 30 hours of CEU's would be very much appreciated!

Thanks!

Specializes in Outpatient/Clinic, ClinDoc.

I work from home as a CDI too! :) I'm not in California, but I used to be - and I just did one of those quick 30 CEU things they send you in the mail every renewal. Unless something has changed recently that's all you need.

here in NY we don't need CEU's or practice hours, just an infection control class every two years /shrug.

Specializes in Critical care, tele, Medical-Surgical.

There is no requirement to be employed as an RN. Completion of 30 continuing education hours is sufficient to renew an RN license in California. After I retired I took CE classes and renewed my license so I can do volunteer work that requires a license.
