Should second-hand smoke be illegal in a home with children?

What do you think?

lol - right! like i said before, just because someone's "daddy" got drunk and beat up "mommy" it means alcohol is bad - it couldn't be that "daddy" had no self control.

and daddy had no self control, because we all know that alcohol is an effective disinhibitor.

i'd love to see alcohol outlawed....and cigarettes.

Me too!

Drinking does the same. I dislike both!:D

Drinking does the same as ?? heroin?

I thought this was about smoking. Regardless one cannot compare heroin with drinking nor smoking! Wow!

Some people are alcoholics yes, and those people are not in the mindset to look after children,

but that would go for any addict, whether it be a sex addict, a food addict, a shoppaholic, as their addiction would take over any common sence. Just recently on the news one lady left a bunch of children that she was watching (babysitting) and went shopping.

Drinking alcohol in a moderate amount does not effect ones mental capabilities to the point where they cannot look after their children.

What's the big deal about parents going outside to smoke? I have a 2 year old, neither my husband nor myself smoke. We have relatives/friends who do...everyone knows that smoking is absolutely not allowed in our house under any circumstances. I won't take my child into a house where someone smokes in the house right in front of her. It's not healthy and its not good for her. I despise smoking and think it should be outlawed, but I'm realistic enough to know that that would never happen. If someone smokes and they have children...can't they just step outside, smoke, and be done with it?

Nothing. I smoke. I smoke outside. However my children still complain about the smell on my clothes ;)

My point to Starzrn is that if the govt fines people for smoking infront of their children (2nd hand smoke) then when does it stop as some people believe third hand smoke is just as harmful if not more.

Yes I think smoking is harmful as well, but the govt should not be involved, instead we need to keep educating, and yes it is working, less people smoke then they did in the 60s, 70s and 80s. More homes are smoke free. Younger and younger children are learning what smoking does to ones body...education is the key, not fines :)

I was making a point that both can cause mind altering:uhoh3:

Really...after all of the "education" I am reading that smoking is on the rise nationwide for high schoolers http://www.whec.com/news/stories/S2001749.shtml?cat=565

Let me ask you a couple of questions that I really hope you answer

1. Do you believe third hand smoke could harm your children or not?

2. What exactly caused you to start smoking outside. Do you remember what you read or heard that changed your mind?

I apologize, however alcohol if drank responsibly cannot be compared to heroin. There is no denying that alcohol is mind altering, even caffiene is mind altering, that chocolate bar or hot chocolate has a stimulating effect. Hmm warm milk helps one sleep, caffiene is stimulating...hotcholate? I always wondered about that when I was a child ;) lol

The article you listed states a rise only in New York state. Nation wide statement is not acurate.

I haven't the slightest idea why I'm posting this but~

Why should Studentpn 73 Answer your questions?

If I were her, I wouldn't. I have been waiting 17 pages for you to answer a single question I posed and....here I am, still waiting.

I put a lot of time, thought and effort in my responses to your questions. So have many, many others.

You actually posed a very thought provoking topic, and instead of embracing the original interest you sparked, you have ended all insightful discourse offered.

I'm sure you will counter with the fact that you have also posed questions to "people speaking against" the topic that you feel haven't been answered yet....

But I have answered your only real question: I told you indirectly once, and

directly once: that the hypothetical child suffering with asthma or any other related breathing ailment, should be reported to social work as there are laws that already exist that will help them.

I am pretty sure the moderators are standing on the doorstep of this thread, simply biding their time before they shut this down. Personally I think it will be a blessing.

Although I don't agree with you, you need to learn that in order to create a movement and change in the world, you need support for the idea.

Starting off on a discussion thread is an excellent point, but if you are not willing to listening to opposing views now, and rationally explain and answer concerns and most importantly adapt your ideas....How will you ever do it on a larger scale?

The world is a much tougher crowd to "win over" than nurses...

That said- good luck with your ventures

Because, although I became your "nemisis of a sort" on here

I do truly think that smoking around children is terrible

and I'm done.

Interesting, the article states high school kids in that one state are on the rise for smoking but adults in that one state have dropped.

Im from Canada,

here are some interesting links

http://www.calgaryherald.com/business/energy-resources/Cancer%20society%20calls%20Alberta%20wide%20smoking%20cars%20with%20children/4130314/story.html

(as for the last link I do believe the law passed in Alberta so it is now illegal to smoke in cars with children).

1) I have already answered this question. I do not know the answer. It may. I know my children do not like the smell and are bothered by it and I know of others who are non smokers who are bothered by it. Maybe it does. Maybe it is just as bad as 2nd hand smoke. Who knows.

2) We have always known that 2nd hand smoke is not good for children. A few months before our first was born we started painting and airing our home out. Never smoked in our home again. Wanted it fresh for our baby. No smoke! When we bought our new home, same thing, we just refused to have anyone smoke near or around our children. Not even send them to a sitter's who smoked. :)

thank you for your honesty.

how does it make you feel to know your children don't like the smell and that you are not sure if you are harming them by third hand smoke or not?

?

I'm just curious if you've thought about the class implications of fining or whatever parents who smoke around their kids. Since higher rates of smoking are correlated with higher rates of poverty...do families that already have the cards stacked against them need further undermining?

I'm also curious: how much experience do you have with group homes for kids?
