Currently I am unemployed. I have been unemployed since the summer. I would like to become a nurse and I will be taking the prereqs this fall. I have a chance to volunteer at Weill Cornell Medical Center and I wondering if I should do it? I was thinking that volunteering at a hospital would look good on my application to nursing school and I could gain some clerical experience at the hospital that could help me find a job but I don't want to waste my time if it would not help me at all. Would you volunteer in my situation?

I think that it will definitely help you! Many nursing schools look at your healthcare setting experience, and your volunteer experience. I started volunteering in the O.R. at a hospital in november for the same reason. I actually got into a nursing school a couple weeks later, but I am still volunteering in the meantime. I really like being there and getting to know how it works. Also, you get to know nurses and doctors. I am hoping my volunteer experience will even help me get a job there when I graduate nursing school. There is no downside, especially if you aren't doing anything else (work wise).

I agree- you should go for it! I volunteer at MSKCC, and I also got into nursing school, although I'm not sure how much volunteering helped my case. It is a very fulfilling experience and you will learn a lot and feel more comfortable in the hospital setting when it comes time for clinicals. Good luck!

ABSOLUTELY!! Just curious how did you get the chance to volunteer @ WCMC?? Ive been looking into volunteering but most hospitals require that you at least be a nursing student . I wont be starting my LPN course until Fall '09 and am too unemployed:bluecry1:
