Should I take a year off before nursing school?

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

(This was initially posted in the FL forum but got no response)

Hey, all. Looooong time lurker here. I'm finishing my BA in Psychology in December this year and taking my pre-reqs for an ABSN. I'm interested in UF, UNF, and FSU. Unfortunately, I'm not a FL resident although I do have family over there and can get residency. I was wondering if I should just study Out of State next year, or wait a year and live there for 12 months, get residency, and then study In-state with the much cheaper tuition. I realize I'd (technically) be losing a year of salary (assuming I get a job upon graduation) which isn't a big deal for UNF which adds up to 30-40k out of state. But UF (top choice) is $995 per credit OOS and $207 in-state. HUGE difference.

If it helps, I turn 24 this year, have no debt to worry about or dependents. My ultimate goal is to get a DNP (but that'll happen later).

Also any tips on getting residency would be awesome. Feel free to PM me.

Hi there, I'm a FL nursing student originally from another state. Personally, I waited for residency before starting my nursing program. It was an enormous difference in tuition and any of the schools you listed are going to be very expensive for you.

You could get your EMT or CNA and get some experience during your year off of school. Help get you more comfortable in the field and start making connections. A CNA is faster but you can do more with an EMT
