Should I take a non-nursing position?

Published

i, like so many new grads cannot find work in maryland. yes most hospitals are hiring experienced nurses. i have worked as a cna for almost three years. i was told that i had to quit my job after i became licensed, so i did, because no problem, "nurses were in demand." i have been considering taking a position as a medical assistant, but i have been advised not to do it, because "it looks bad to future nurse recruiters". i also heard that after six months or so, hospitals do not want to hire you as a new grad, and when they do hire new grads again, the positions will only be open to new grads from a certain month. i graduated three months ago! i will ask the famous question: how do you get the experience if nobody wants to train you? should i take a nursing support position? will it be too late for me to apply for a new grad position when they start back up again in a few months? please share your thoughts with me. or at least words of encouragement....i need it

thank you very much, and good luck to everyone in the same boat.

I just remembered that I posted this thread in the Graduate Nurse Forum not the Maryland Forum. Of course the regulations probably vary by state. Here are the exact responses that I received from the Maryland BON:

"The Board does not have any regulations which prevent an RN who is currently certified as a CNA in good standing, from working as a CNA."

-Administrator, Nursing Assistant Certification Program

and

"Registered Nurses are not prohibited from working in a position as a CNA when the registered nurse has been issued the certification as a CNA from the MBON."

-Director of Nursing Practice

Hmm...maybe I should see if I could borrow money to take the CNA test because I need a job....I can't continue to sit on my butt all day, filling out endless apps with no replies.

I don't think you need to take the CNA test to become a CNA. Visit this site, it's info from the Maryland Board of Nursing. http://www.mbon.org/main.php?v=norm&p=0&c=cna/nsg_students.html

Thanks, I'll check it out!

Ohh ok, I'm from PG County.

You probably have already applied but Dimensionshealth.org has a posting for a new grad in medsurg and critical care. This is the system that consits of PG and Laurel Regional hospital.

Yeah I put in a new grad app for Laurel...I didnt see any new grad positions listed for pg hospital but wont hurt to call them. Thanks!

Wow, this thread is so sad. I am already wavering as to whether or not to even bother to apply to nursing school and this thread is definitely helping the "con" side. I can't believe that you have to even think of working as a CNA when you have made it through nursing school and now a licensed RN. It is just too sad. Being a CNA SUCKS and wouldn't wish it on anyone. That is another reason that I am thinking that nursing isn't for me because I HATED being a CNA. Plus is the pay as a CNA even worth it. I have a friend who makes some ungodly amount of money, like $8.50/hr to be a CNA. It is just sad considering what CNA's have to deal with.

Good luck with the job search.

Wow, that's terrible. I am not sure what region and specialty your friend works in, but that does seem to be very low pay for a CNA. I made 12.77 in labor and delivery, and I thoroughly enjoyed my work. I really thought it was an amazing, fun job. But I have nothing but respect for CNAs in the nursing home (who actually take good care of their patients that is). I don't think they are compensated or valued or treated like that assets that they are.

Yes it really is terrible with what the new grad nursing market is going through right now, but I honestly don't think it can last forever. Think about it, can it? I sure hope not! Most days I want to run into every nursing school in Maryland and yell "don't do it, don't do it! you will be unemployed and people will look at you like - Your an RN, and you can't get work? whats wrong with you?" I often ask myself what is wrong with me, but I don't think it's me.

It's starting to look up, at least for me, a little. I have an interview in a week. I got the call today, and applied for the job in the beginning of Sept. Wish me luck! It's my second interview for an RN position. I didn't get the last one. I think the interview went well, but it did not seem like a fit for me (although I would be thankful for an offer) and they did not even seem to need me, they already seemed staffed.

If nursing is something you truly want to do, I still recommend going to nursing school. Your heart really has to be in it though. Hopefully this mess would be over when you graduate, but I would never expect any guarantees in todays world. I think it would depend on what you hated about being a CNA, that would determine if nursing is for you or not. Beware, most RNs do "CNA work" too, as an good RN would/should (in my opinion.) Good luck to you though.

Good luck MissBrittanyRN on your interview--Is it a hospital or LTC or SNF? Or better yet L&D?

Thanks! It's a cardiovascular stepdown unit in a hospital. L&D is my passion, but I am very interested in cardiac too. Although it's not absolutely necessary, I want to have a little experience in a medical setting before L&D, so I am hoping for the best! Of course an L&D offer would be amazing too.
