Should I take a non-nursing position?

Published

i, like so many new grads cannot find work in maryland. yes most hospitals are hiring experienced nurses. i have worked as a cna for almost three years. i was told that i had to quit my job after i became licensed, so i did, because no problem, "nurses were in demand." i have been considering taking a position as a medical assistant, but i have been advised not to do it, because "it looks bad to future nurse recruiters". i also heard that after six months or so, hospitals do not want to hire you as a new grad, and when they do hire new grads again, the positions will only be open to new grads from a certain month. i graduated three months ago! i will ask the famous question: how do you get the experience if nobody wants to train you? should i take a nursing support position? will it be too late for me to apply for a new grad position when they start back up again in a few months? please share your thoughts with me. or at least words of encouragement....i need it

thank you very much, and good luck to everyone in the same boat.

I ended up taking a retail position at Best Buy this past Friday, so for now, this is what I will be doing. I did get a call today about scheduling an interview with an OB-GYN office, so I possibly will have that sometime this week.

Good luck to you with your potential interview NewAggieGrad!

Thanks...I'm gonna call her back again tomorrow to reschedule since she hasn't returned my call.

I'd like to chime in about just how much I hear you. I, too, am a 'new' grad (passed NCLEX in March), and have been turned down for over 36 job applications, each taking about 2 hours to complete as they are comprehensive. I have good grades, a BA in English, and management experience. Now, as an RN, I can't get a job as a nurse and can't move back into public health as few positions are open in the nonprofit arena.

I've never been as disappointed in my culture as I am now. We need nurses, and at the first sign of economic downturn, the medical establishment CUTS NEW NURSES from their priority list? My famliy is struggling, and we may lose our house because I bought the career redirectment incentives from three years ago. I love nursing and love the work that is nursing, but don't see a career in it anymore. It's quite sad.

Good luck to you Anne. It looks like you have been out of school even longer than me. Although this will not get you your "real" nursing experience, and it may be too late in the season, if you need a paycheck, you could try doing flu shots. Especially now that some hospitals are really pushing them on their employees, large hospitals may need help vaccinating everyone. That is what I have been doing, however with the shortage of vaccine, I have had very little hours. I have filled out 63 applications including tech positions. I had my second interview today, so lets keep our fingers crossed for me!

Hey Ms Brittney,

Let's keep our fingers crossed! I, too, signed up with the flu shots, but like you, the shortage gives me 0 hours, along with the fact that experienced nurses are looking for hours too. I will probably have to quit school and find a job outside of nursing.

I plan on going back for my BSN with all of my spare time. It's a perfect time to apply for financial aid. I don't have a J-O-B and because of my age I have to provide parents financial info too, and they are just as broke as I am!
