Should I take Micro and Physiology in the same semester?

Published

Hi all,

My question is is it possible/doable to take Physiology & Microbiology together? My school slpits up Anatomy & Physiology, and I have taken Anatomy this past spring semester. I would like to take the micro with the pysiology during the Fall semester. I will not be working, but I do have two children. I would have time while they are in school to study. I've heard that these two classes complement each other..has anyone done this and how successful were you? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Im hoping to finish these two so that I would be able to TEAS by the end of the year. :lol2:

i just finished a&p2 and micro.. got a B in both :) its not that bad, as long as your dedicated to studying and can manage your time .. and i worked (very little, about 10 hours a week.. it would have been impossible for me to do more) . It was tough, the workload was a lot, sometimes I'd have an a&p exam one day, and a micro exam the next .. but I'm glad I got them both over with.. Good luck:up:

Hey MonkeyMama, I too need the A&P courses and micro before I can apply to the RN program. I talked with an RN counselor at my college before I registered for fall classes, she advised me to take the A&P and the micro in the same semester. I am not currently working & have no kids at home so can devote most of my free time to studying which there will be a lot of. My college requires all A's in the prereq courses in order to be considered for the RN program. If you have time to devote to studying it can be done! Good Luck. :uhoh3:

Thanks for all the advice my fellow nursing students/nurses..I appreciate it. Im actually looking forward to the semester because it will mean Im closer to my goal..Exciting!!:D[email protected] would love to hear how it goes with you..since well be in the same boat..I think we'll do great!! Good luck to you!!

So this semester I took Micro, Phys, Medical term, Sociology and a CNA course from the red cross on Saturdays and Sundays. I am a single mom with a 5 year old and in all honesty it was brutal. A lot of sleepless nights, aggrevating days, and stress beyond belief (I gained 10-15 lbs and I was barely eating). I will say now that it is done it feels extremely rewarding. I had people in my micro or phys class who said that was the only class they were taking. I got an A in phys and will most likely get a B in micro (I had the worst micro teacher imaginable - I am an A student and could barely pass her lecture exams). Needless to say you have to know your own strengths. If you struggled with Anatomy I would probably think twice about taking them together. If science is your thing then do it. Just remember the point difference between an A and a B might be the difference of getting into the school of your choice. I know it is for me. 5 points between an A and the B I will get in micro puts me below the cut off for the LA County program. I would spend the time evaluating your schedule and really being honest with yourself. You can ask all the people on here and everyone will give you a different answer. The truth is you are the only one who knows. I might suggest going on ratemyprofessor.com and seeing what other students are saying about your professors that you are scheduled for.

I took A&PII and Micro last semester, have two small children, do not work outside the home, and received an A in both. You can definitely do it, but it will require a ton of studying. The experience should get you ready for what nursing school will be like!!

I took Phys and Micro this spring semester that just passed - I don't work but my twins are 5 - they were pretty good about letting me study (lets just say they watched Toy Story 3 waaaay too many times LOL) but I got an A- in Micro and a B- in Physiology - and C's in both labs...

Taking it from someone who just did microbiology and physiology in the same semester.

You really need to stay on top of it. You have to study everyday. Good you don't work and you have kids because you can study while playing with them.

Anyway I just took an all written microbiology final yesterday. I think I did pretty well. I have an A average so I think I calculated my grade to be getting a 160/200 on the final for the lowest A. I used flashcards for microbiology. I would say that you need to on top of it. The hardest chapters was the chemotherapeutic chapter because you have to learn all these antibiotics, antivirals, antifungals, antiprotozoan, antihelminth etc..... but once I learned it, it made later chapters easier especially the diseases.

Physiology, its not a combo like yours because I did anatomy in winter intersession. I got an A. I have my physiology final this thursday. As in micro, we had a choice to take a traditional final or an all written final. I picked all written for physio because its basically all pathways. Basically you learn like the vision pathway or renal pathway or w/e and you just answer follow up questions. Like if this drug was added and it did this, then what did the drug do based on the pathway. My instructor really puts critical thinking in the tests. I actually studied a lot and got over a 100% on the first test! What helped me was buying a little whiteboard, a little bigger than a binder. I just rewrote an rewrote all the pathways. It has help ALOT. I always recommend it.

Good Luck

You'll do fine! I have 2 kids (boys- 3 & 4, so you know this house is crazy) and a part time job. I took A&P 1, Micro, and two 200 level Psych classes and got a 4.0 for the semester. It helps that I have an incredibly supportive husband and a mother in law that never refused to watch my kids if I needed a few hours to myself. It's a lot of studying, but you can do it. I've noticed that if you communicate with your professors from the get go and let them know that you're there to get an A, not just to pass the class, they're very helpful if any questions ever arise. Sit in the front of the class and answer questions whenever you can.

You can totally do it! Best of luck!

You can do it! I took Micro and Physiology together fall of '10, and worked part-time, passed with A's in both classes. And that was with never studying & then cramming the night before an exam & starting papers the night before they were due (My worst habit EVER. Need to nip that in the bud before nursing school this fall!) Micro was really fun, I loved the labs. Although I took the traditional classes, my school also offered lab classes that are online/blended where your lecture is online and you only come to campus for lab. Maybe yours does too?

If your school allows take both of them at the same time, then take both, but a lot of hard work.
