Should I take my algebra classes over?

Published

I placed in essentials of intermediate algebra on my placement test but I have taken Intermediate algebra in College. I need statistics for nursing program. I believe they said I could use my grade in my previous algebra class for prerequisite for statistics. Do you think I should do that or should I take the essentials of intermediate algebra and intermediate algebra again? I don't know how difficult statistics is and do not know if I need to take my algebras again? Any advice is welcome.

Hi Heathermaizey,

Do you think the Intermediate Algebra at CC that I got a 2.5 in 2001 would count?

It depends. If the school will accept credits over 7 years old, then yes. Here are the issues I see. First it is over 7 years old. But, I had taken A&P I 15 years ago, but because I was reapplying to the same college, then they took my grade and I did not have to retake it. Will it affect you going into the program? My school counted only 4 classes, but we had to get a "C" or above in the prereq classes to get in. I would meet with your nursing program advisor and see what she has to say. I met with a regular advisor for my first 15 credits, then after that it went to the nursing advisor who could help me more in what I needed to do. At my school the regular advisors had no idea what was needed in the nursing program to get in.

Hi Heathermaizey,

Thank you, I will meet with the nursing program advisor and ask him/her if my Intermediate Algebra class is still acceptable. Because I don't believe the Intermediate Algebra is counted as a prerequisite for the nursing program. But I know the Statistics is a prerequisite for the nursing program. I believe you have to get a 2.5 in Statistics because it is a prerequisite and all other prerequisites are a 3.0. And I think there is no time limit on the Intermediate Algebra because there is no time limit on Statistics. But I will double check.

stats isn't some fancy smancy math class like calculus :geek:

it is more similar to algebra style math but does require some cleverness when it comes to tricky wording problems. As long as you understand algebra well and study plenty you shouldn't have a problem.

I will consider taking another placement test and a brush up class. I am prepared to study plenty. I was told Statistics was learning some formulas and using a graphing calculator. That I would not use too much from Algebra. So that doesn't sound right.

This is true. It's not really necessary to be skilled in math to be successful in math per se. Of course you need to know the basics, but as you say it is made up of formulas, graphs, and graphing calculators. I didn't use a lick of math that I learned in college, just followed the directions of what I was supposed to do based off the formulas and words that I learned.

Stats isn't a heavy math course by no means. Some stuff learned in there reminded me of other math courses. you'll see a bunch of formulas written in slightly different ways and of course they are used in different situations. Drawing a picture of the graph from a word problem will help out your step by step solution. It will be fun!

I'm not sure which State you are located in, but in our State, the prerequisite for the Statistics Course, is College Algebra, not Intermediate Algebra! Curious, when you say 2.5, is that equivalent to a C+? BTW, are you attending a For-Profit Private School or a Public Community College / 4-Year University?

AT my school D isn't considered a passing grade. If it is a class that is needed, you would have to retake it. If it isn't a class you need, you can brush on your math using Alek, I used it to brush up on my math skills before taking my placement test. Actually, It jumped me a whole class. Some colleges use it for credit. You can find it on line.

Hi mindofmidwifery,

Thank you for the information.

Hi dorkypanda,

Thank you for the information.

Hi SoniaReb,

I am in Washington State, Essentials of Intermediate Algebra is a prerequisite. A 2.5 is a B- The CC is a Public Community College.
