I placed in essentials of intermediate algebra on my placement test but I have taken Intermediate algebra in College. I need statistics for nursing program. I believe they said I could use my grade in my previous algebra class for prerequisite for statistics. Do you think I should do that or should I take the essentials of intermediate algebra and intermediate algebra again? I don't know how difficult statistics is and do not know if I need to take my algebras again? Any advice is welcome.

I don't understand why you would have to repeat the class? Do you mean you might want to take it as a refresher before stats?
Hi mindofmidwifery,
Yes I thought that would be a good refresher or should I just do some review on my own? I don't know why but the advisor told me to take the placement test even though I already had the college algebra.

Waste of time in my opinion. Any brushing up you might need can be done from within the stat class.
When did you last take college algebra? In my opinion if you got through intermediate college algebra, you can get through stats. I took intermediate algebra and stats at the same time and struggled with algebra but breezed through stats, even with it being an online course.
Hi Caliotter3,
Thank you for the advice, so it sounds like the stat class is not too difficult? It is manageable?
Well, all courses can be as easy or as difficult as the instructor makes them. My stat course was easier than I expected, but that is because, from my perspective, the instructor made it easy. He even alluded to that in his introduction.
I last took Intermediate college algebra in 2001 and got a 2.5. Then I took, I believe Intermediate College Algebra through University of Phoenix online and I barely passed with a D in 2011. So I think that why the advisor was making me take a placement test. But I believe I can still use my grade from 2001 over the grade in 2011. That's what he said but still wanted me to take placement test. I am a little confused by that.
Is it true you use the graphing calculator a lot in the course?
Either way I think you're fine. At my CC, you just need to pass college pre algebra to take stats and stats isn't even considered a math course. As long as you follow everything, study, and use resources you will do fine.
Hi Mindofmidwifery,
Thank you, I sure would hate to take two math courses over again if I do not need to. I will seriously consider using my grade from Intermediate College Algebra course over my placement test so I can start in Statistics.

If you got a D in a previous class, that won't fly for the nursing program. At my school, it's a C or better. Plus it was a University of Phoenix class? That's probably not transferable. Intermediate Algebra is not college algebra. It is a high school level or 000 level class. Otherwise it would be called college algebra. You probably need to take the refresher classes as a prereq.
