Should I retake some not required pre-reqs...

Published

The nursing program at the local community college requires only four prereqs, A&P + L, basic chemistry, and Human Development, to apply. I started at a university in 2002 as a pre-med student and got a "C" in CHM 1045, BSC 2010 & BSC 2010L. I have to take them over because by the time I apply to the nursing school within the next year to two years, it will be past the 10 year time frame. Should I retake any science or math classes that arent required prereqs to better my chances of getting in? Or would it really just be a waste of time. Or should I just take the required prereqs, apply, and if I dont get in, retake the math and science courses that arent required but with "A"'s?

Any advice or experience is welcome. I already have a B.S. in HR, and my goal is to obtain a BSN by the time I turn 30 which will be in 4 years, well 3. I turn 27 this year. Thanks.

I would if I was you, but that is just my personal opinion.

I am applying to a school at the end of this year that is stictly based on GPA. Their website says that they primarily look at nursing pre req GPA and secondarily the overall GPA and number of courses taken. I have a 4.0 nursing pre req GPA and like a 3.7 overall GPA. I took a sociology course online and didn't bother with it (not a required nursing pre req course) and ended up with a C (YIKES) - so I am retaking that class over the summer.

well it depends. the program I am in looks at overall GPA, and if you meet the requirements, then they rate you by quality points for just the required pre-reqs...before admitting students. So you might be wasting time and money if you take other classes...unless you need to up your GPA, I would call up the school and see how they rate applicants....good luck!

If chemistry and biology are not pre-reqs. are they at the very least, co-reqs.? I don't understand why you are worried about the 10 year time frame if they are not required classes.

It would be a waste of time and money to retake classes that won't have any impact whatsoever with admissions (e.g. if admissions only considers pre-req. GPA).

To which program will you be applying?

Associates of Nursing for an RN, then transfer to the University for a BSN. I figured if I retook my science classes that I took in 2002 - 2003 that arent prereqs it would better my chances.

But are the science classes required? I don't know what CHM 1045, BSC 2010 & BSC 2010L is....are they just Gen Chem and General Bio?

Right. Only the basic chemistry is required with A&P. I've taken only the Chemistry required prereq and earned a C about ten years ago. I have about 24 credits of science classes like biology, the labs, chemistry ll and the lab and earned like C's in them. Should I retake them even though its not required?

Would the point of retaking be to boost your overall GPA? Or are you thinking that you need better grades in those courses specifically will increase your chances?

Honestly, each school looks at different things. You'd likely get a better answer if you spoke to someone at admissions at the school you're looking to apply to. They'll let you know what factors they prioritize in admission decisions.

I concur. Talk to the school and see what you can do to best increase your chances of getting in. Some schools look at overall gpa (in which case retaking non prereq courses may help) while other schools look strictly at prerequisite courses (so it wouldn't matter).

Talk to the school in question.

Also be wary of repeating too many classes. Some programs won't consider you if you've repeated x number of courses. Sometimes it's prereqs, sometimes its a certain number of credits. Every program is so specific that any nonspecific program information anyone gives you is truly pointless. Talk to the admissions people at the institution in question.
