Should I retake A&P1?

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

So I'm currently in my 2nd year of " pre-nursing" at nassau community college. ( I wanted to bang out all the liberal art classes before applying to the program) I have an 3.5 gpa but i got only an C in anatomy & physiology. My professor was horrid & useless, i would study an hour a day & after lab & lecture, i was so disappointed in only getting an C no matter how much i studied. Nether the less I am really discouraged, I took microbiology and gotten an A! My professor for a&p 1 was horrid nightmare,he would brag about himself and his MD the majority of lecture and how he's such a wonderful DR instead of teaching the material. He also loved to spring lab practicals on us without more then a day's warning, lovely professor wasn't he!? We also had a 60% class average. :eek:But people told me to re-take the a&p class again because theres no way getting into the program at ncc or nursing at all? Is this true?

- So my question is this, Should i take a&p2 and try to get an A before retaking a&p1? I really believe i know the information till this day & will be able to do well in a&p2! I really don't have the money to re-take a&p1-_- sigh Will the one C really affect my chances that much when ALL my other classes or B's and A's!?

Thank you in advance for who ever reads this and replies!

"Will the one C really affect my chances that much when ALL my other classes or B's and A's!?"

It will at some schools, not so much at other schools. Your advisor would be a better person to ask but I took a quick look over the website of your school and it looks like it would really matter. Your school has no wait list, it is all competitive based only on gpa (not sure about that, but couldn't find anything about essays or test scores or interviews) and they care most about the A&P grade (it is the only one that can be attempted only twice, including W).

On the other hand, I don't know how many apply or what the recent lowest gpas that got in are or whether they have other criteria or that I'm not seeing. I also don't know how many credits your current gpa is based on vs how many credits are left to take or whether the remaining classes are more or less likely to bring your gpa up.

Either way, if you can't afford to retake the class, can you afford to finish the prereqs without being sure you have good chance of getting in, Maybe you can't afford not to retake it.

For what it is worth, the general rule of thumb is at least two to three hours of study time per credit. A&P I is four credit class, so eight to twelve hours of study time per week would be the baseline expectation. More if you need to teach yourself (a regretable but not uncommon situation).

I wish you well whichever way you go.

Retake the A & P 1. You need the A and the knowledge. Make sure you check out Rate My Prof online before you sign up with any professors. Not 100% accurate but rings true most... of the time. Speak with people who have had the class and ask them about their teachers. A bad teacher/instructor/professor can break you every time. Do everything you can to avoid one. Best of luck to you!

I would retake A&P 1

For a few reasons

  • Many schools only look at your natural science GPA, and a C is not good at all for your GPA when most schools expect you to have at least a 2.5, sometimes 3.0 before applying. Especially in NYC. Most of the more competitive programs wind up with cut offs in the high 3.**'s
  • It is really important for you to have a strong grasp on subject in 1 before moving onto 2. I feel like if you do not really know your stuff in 1, 2 will be so much harder for you. You said yourself your teacher was ineffective, better you have a strong understanding of the subjects.
  • A lot of what is in A & P can be found on the entrance exams. An understanding of these subjects will help you score higher on tests like the nln tease hesi, etc...

A quick word of advice before retaking, make sure this is your last time. Many schools will not let you apply if you take more then two classes over.

Thank you all for taking the time to reply, I Decided I'm going to retake a&p1 next fall, i pray i don't get this professor again, i hate that nassau it fills up so quick and has TBA were the professors names are, sigh! :uhoh3:

I would go ahead and take 2 and then take 1 over whenever you want to. I knew someone that got an A in 2 and a C or B in 1 soooooo...its up to you I guess....but me? I would go ahead with 2 and redo 1 later. :)

I am at a community college with a two year waiting list for the RN program. There was lots of hearsay about grades before I applied. I would speak to a counsler before you spend the money on retaking a class. Each college is different. My college requires a C in anatomy and physiology and you must take it to apply. I thought that grade point average would weigh in on me getting accepted... but it seemed as long as you met the criteria you could gain a spot on the waiting list. Also, congratulations on your A in Micro. At our school, a lot of the professors recommend taking micro after A and P I and II because it is so challenging. There is a huge difference in teaching styles among the professors at my college for anatomy. So, I can see how a teacher can either make or break your expirience. I was lucky, and I hope you are too, if you decide to retake it.

Please make sure you look into the programs "repeat policy". Some schools only allow one class to be retaken.

Take it over now. Don't listen to people who say you can get into nursing school without an A in A&P, it RARELY happens. You NEED an A, most of the time people with a B won't even be accepted, let alone a C. Make sure you don't sign up for the same prof though, that won't help. Good luck!!!

I got a C in A&P 2 (I refuse to blame the teacher) and still got into my BSN program. There are plenty of us non 4.0 GPA students who got into our programs. I have a friend who has a 4.0 GPA and hasn't gotten into any programs yet, he's trying for one more. Grades are definitely important, but some programs desire more than that.

I would retake it. It totally depends on the program but I know a C in A&P would not cut it in my program. Don't know anyone that has gotten in with a C. Perhaps it does happen, but for the folks that I know that have not gotten in, C in A&P seems to be one of the common factors. Different schools do different things, so you should speak to a nursing advisor - Sometimes its not such a big deal with schools with waiting lists. My school makes selections strictly on GPA and TEAS scores so you have to let those speak loud and clear. Especially with A&P. But like I said, different programs have different requirements so its best to find out from a nursing advisor at your school.
