Should I register for my CA license now or apply for reciprocity from NY?

Published

I am a new graduate from a NY state nursing program and made the decision to move to Los Angeles and find a nursing job there. It has been a really confusing process and I do not know what to do.. I was hoping someone can give me advice.

1) Can I take the NCLEX here in NY if I want my CA license?

2) Would it make more sense to get my NY license first and then request reciprocity, send the paperwork and fee etc to be licensed in CA? I heard it can take 4 months for the CA application to be processed! So maybe I should first get the NY and then CA? It's ridiculous though as I will be moving to CA anyway. I do not want to have to wait 4 months to take the NCLEX!

3) Which application do I submit first? Pearson Vue registration or NY/CA application?

4) When should I submit what? And in what order? Also, if I take the NCLEX in NY and pass, can I apply for the CA license before I have the actual license (but I know I passed)? I understand it can take weeks to receive the license.

5) Is the process quicker to reciprocate a CA license from a NY license than to apply for initial licensure in California?

Help! I'm confused and I don't want to decide something that I am going to regret...

Thank you!

I highly suggest that you get your license in NY and pursue work in both places simultaneously. You will find that getting a job in CA is easier said than done. You could get a job in some areas of NY and save up money for the move while gaining experience. Otherwise, you will just be one of the many new grads who can't find work in CA.

I ditto caliotter3! It is a very competitive market for the ones who are surviving in California cost of living (simular to NY) everyone wants 6mo to 1 year experience. I have been trying since September 2009 and with my RN I have continued on in the RN to BSN program while I am looking for work. Good luck....

I sort of found a job already in Bakersfield... my dad works there and I would be staying with family during interviews, while looking for jobs, etc.

This a great for you. The Central Valley is more open to new grads than the coastal cities so you should be OK. I graduated from Fresno College . I now live in the bayarea, but I may have to move back to the Central Valley.

If you already have a job offer, then get your initial license in CA using your Dad's address.
