Should I get a "jump-start" studying???

Published

Hi Everyone,

I start my nursing program next month and was wondering if I should get a jump-start reading any of the material. I have been reviewing dosage calculations, but then wondered if I should wait in case there is a specific format to follow. How many of you are in a school that requires only one way of calculating doses and drip rates, etc... I have been trying to find out the easiest way for me to learn them. I have to say that I am the most nervous about this aspect of the program. Thanks for the advice! :)

Jump starts are always a nice start! ;) I'd say go for it in your free time! That way you'll feel more at ease going into it all. I plan on dabbling in it here and there before I get accepted into the program. It couldn't hurt right? I plan on starting a little mini-collection of Nurse-related info-guides/books to get familiar with. I think that's a great way to get insight on a lot of things you're about to come face to face with! Good luck!

I just got all of my books, and while the go between at the comm. coll. doesn't have a syllabus finalized yet, she told me which book to dive into to prepare for the first day. (our clinicals start on day 15)

At our school we are using the Formula Method....D/H times Q! I find this to be the easiest way to do the math. As for the "jump start" to studying...Dosage Calc always is a good thing to study. We have to take a 10 point entrance test before each new nursing class and receive a 100% on it to move on in the nursing program. Very strenuous and nervewracking so Yes I would consider studying dosage calc and getting that under your belt.

I know I am. I went to the gym yesterday and read a big Ch while on the elliptical. Hoping to get into a habit of that! Lol. I have syllabus already and we have reading plus videos to watch before school even starts.

I start a medication dosage class (2 weeks, 1 credit intro) on Monday and I already have the first 2 assignments done - hoping to work on some more over the weekend...

I personally wish I had memorized lab values.

No you won't know what they apply to or which diseas process causes changes in them but half the battle is knowing if they are too low or too high.

the rest you'll get as you go through medsurg.
