Should I get my CNA license before I go to college?

Published

Hello!

I am going to college to get a degree in nursing after i graduate high school and I was wondering if it would be worth it to get my CNA license over the summer so that I can start working at a hospital? I think it would be a great job and way to get some experience in the field but i dont know if it would be worth it? I also have no idea if there are any jobs as a CNA in Indiana hospitals. I'm not looking to work in a nursing home as that would not be where I'm planning to specialize. What should I do?

Thanks,

Kelsey

yeah but im talking summer job and it gives me some experience in the field

Knikki, I am doing the same thing as you :) Plus...at least at my school...if you get your license as a CNA and show you worked prior to clinicals, they don't make you take Pharmacology. Nothing wrong with doing CNA beforehand!

Kgle, is it Pharm that you wouldn't have to take? I thought it was Fundamentals Lab. You'll do the class the second eight weeks correct? What scrubs do you have to wear for that? I wonder how Emmi is doing in it!

oops! You're right ;) I thought that sounded weird when I typed it! Yep, I start March 15th.

I'm still a little lost on scrubs. The lady at the bookstore told me the dark blue scrubs were okay, but the tops say Medical Assistant and well, that's definitely not my program haha. So I am going to double check with the chair.

CSAB--due to that whole Financial Aid issue I was unable to take the CNA Prep course this semester. Well I guess I could have but I was only approved for 6 credit hours and I still have other courses needed before applying to the LPN and RN program! I am excited for KGLE to start though...and kind of jealous:) but I will be taking it this summer!!

How is your 1st semester going?!

Emmi, sorry to hear that! My first sem. is going okay so far, talk to me tomorrow after the first Fundamentals exam! LOL

If you are applying for fall, I don't know that I would bother with doing the CNA in the summer. It might be more valuable to take a co-req during the summer.

How is the new little guy doing?

LOL you will do fine!! I know it!

As far as the CNA course, I am going to be needing a job soon anyway, after this unemployment is up so I figure even if it won't cut out Pharm for me it will still be beneficial.

Isaiah is doing good...keeping me up all night!!! So I guess it was meant for me to only be allowed to do 6 credit hours this semester because I don't think I could've handled a full load!

I will for sure keep you updated on all the deets of the class!

Specializes in CNA.

Yes go for it!! Being a CNA first will only help you in nursing school & depending on where you go, you may get to skip the first few weeks of Fundamentals. Nurses who are aides first usually have a better understanding of what an aide does once they get their license and dont have the "Im a nurse I dont wipe butts" mentality.

Yes, I think all nurses should get their CNA license first. It will prepare you for the core of nursing which is patient care. Foundations/fundamental your first nursing clinical course is all about what you do as a CNA, like helping patients with ADL's, bed making, proper way to transfer patients, just to name a few. I was a CNA a year before I started my nursing program and when I did start my clinical I felt I had a head start of those who did not have their CNA on only did I know the basics I was comfortable with working with patients and was not afraid to go in the rooms introduce myself, and start caring for them, where others who have not had any patient experience were scared to death to even enter the room. I strongly suggest anyone considering the nursing profession become a CNA first.

Where can I apply for Free CNA certification in Indianapolis, IN????
