Should I buy my own OASIS training?

Specialties Home Health Nursing Q/A

Hi. I'm wondering if I should buy my own OASIS training (online, probably) as a travel nurse relatively new to home health.

My background: 11 years as a nurse, a few of those as travel nurse. For the last 8 months, I've been doing home health nursing for the first time. Because I'm a travel nurse, the employer didn't give me OASIS training. I just get the non-OASIS-documentation visits.

However, my contract is about to end, so I need a new travel job in home health. Unfortunately, in GA, about 90% of the HH jobs are Amedisys, which require OASIS experience.

I'm looking into getting my own OASIS training. It looks like it's about 6-7 hours, costs about $1000. (I'm looking at medbridge education: https://www.medbridge.com/enterprise/solutions/home-based-care/oasis/#courses)

I asked my recruiter if it's worth it for me to buy my own OASIS online training, because at the end of the training,  I still won't have actual on-the-job experience with OASIS. (Not unless I find an employer willing to take a travel nurse with 'training but no experience in OASIS.') Her response was, "better than nothing."

What do y'all think?

Also, any advice on where else to go for OASIS training?

Decision Health and OASIS Answers offer education courses and manuals  much cheaper than that and offer separate certification -best to take after 6-12 mo experience IMHO.  These are companies my previous employer --and many in my area recommend -I've taken training from both.

Home Health Guide to OASIS: A Reference for Field Staff, 2021  is $60, good place to start.

Tina Marrelli MSN, RN's The Handbook of Home Health Standards: Quality, Documentation, and Reimbursement sp;6th Edition  ~ $60  has been my bible for 30+ years -- care planning, diagnosis coding, understanding reimbursement, OASIS, and ICD10 coding all covered.  It's the book that taught me the fine points of home care.

Best wishes in your transition.

Tina Marrelli's book is spiral bound thin pages with over 200 dedicated to many care planning, short and long term goals, discharge plans to create care plan., OASIS section, coding, reimbursement etc -- fits in  a  large lab coatpocket.   You can pick and choose sections-- no need to read everything.  Worth every dollar.  I buy every new edition to keep up to date.

Check out Home Healthcare Now  magazine and website -very helpful info.

Enjoy your course.  Let us know how you liked it as that is a new company  to me.

Amedisys does provide lots of online classes for OASIS - or they do  for employees they hire directly. It's called "Amedisys Academy" It's part of the onboarding/orientation.

Thanks very much, NrsKaren!  I like your signature quote...I'm sending it to my sister right now!

I've decided on rctclearn.net 10-part oasis course - about $500 at this time (https://www.rctclearn.net/oasis). It best fits my needs, for the best price. I'm going ahead and ordering the Home Health Guide, 2021. (I got really scared by the 700+-page book...seriously, I feel palpitations right now.)

Thanks for the links, reviews, and prices!

OK - you sold me! Just bought it. You're a good persuader!

Ha, I think that the lady who taught my online OASIS training (Cindy Krafft) is one of the contributors or quoted people or something in the Big Red BOok, as I'm calling Ms Marrelli's book.

The rctclearn.net education (by Ms Krafft) was good - I was able to get the 10 modules done over the weekend. She talks "real world" but doesn't compromise standards. So I feel baptized into OASIS. I guess things will click for real once I actually do an OASIS charting.

Thanks for the Home Healthcare Now link - I checked it out, and it looks good!
