For about 2 years now i've been considering nursing. I want to get my BSN, get some experience under my belt and then become a school nurse. I've also thought about using my degree to help others in different countries. My church travels to places like China and Haiti and always take a nurse with them. Then only problem with my plan is that i've heard a lot of rumors that nursing is no longer in demand and I will have trouble finding a job. Obviously I will need money to support myself and pay back student loans which wouldn't be possible if i'm unemployed. So my question is (to those who know) is it worth it to get a nursing degree? Or should I look at my other options?

There are plenty of nursing jobs, they are just full with plenty of nurses. The economic downturn tightened the number of nursing jobs. The data show there will be many jobs in the future as the boomers retire. If you want to be a nurse, then do it. If you want to cash in on a trend then look around. You certainly would be useful on church trips in countries like Haiti. Good luck.

Depending on where you live you will find even getting admitted to a program will be challenging....
That is true as well. I hear that at my local college out of almost 350 applicants they only accept 60. Im from California.
California is a hard hit area in this economy.....it is estimated that 47% of all new nursing graduates are unemployed or underemployed. I moved you post to pre nursing for best response.

In my personal experience, significant events and prayer have led me to knowing that I want to be a nurse. It took me about 3 months to finally make my decision. It wasn't a lighthearted decision (for me, anyway) I had to examine both monetary and opportunity costs. I also had to make some serious adjustments to my life so that school could be my number one priority. Also a factor for me is that I don't want to go into student debt and have managed to evade it thus far. Finances might be another thing to consider other than time and effort. Hope this helps! I'm only halfway through my pre-req's so maybe I'm not the best person to take advice from but I guess if I were you I would just continue to think about it and come up with a tangible plan. You gotta be realistic and optimistic, if such a thing is possible Also, I live in California too and that's not stopping my motivation! You go for it girl!

Dear Kimi,
Do you want to be a Nurse only for the sake of getting a job or you really want to be a Nurse? See there won't be any shortage of nurses requirement in the world come what may. Especially if you are willing to go abroad.Middle East is the place where you will get a job as a Nurse even if you did not get anywhere in the world. So please stop worrying. Become a Nurse if you like the profession and not because you need a job, because if it is just a job then there are plenty of field one can focus in to. best of luck dear Vinod-India [email protected]
