Should I apply/waiving of pre reqs

Published

I am a 36 yr old mom. I have my GED and have 27 credits so far that go along with the aas in nursing. (I took them 1 or 2 at a time over the past few years) I have completed; biology, english 1, anatomy & physiology 1 AND 2, gen psychology, develp. psychology, soiciology, and pharmacology. The pre reqs for my local community college nursing program say "algebra, chemistry and biology". All I have is the biology. Others have told me though that with the credits I do have including the anatomy & physiology, that it is worth applying now as the college might waive the other pre reqs. Is this true? Has anyone ever had this experience?

Thanks for any thoughts!

They may take the A&P instead of the bio. But you'll still need the Algebra. Even though you do have all those completed courses..not one is math related and they want that.

I can't speak for your schools but around here, pre-req are just that and you have to take the classes they list or you don't get in.

I guess the best thing to do is call the school(s) you're intrested in and see what their policy on waving pre-reqs is.

Since you have both biology and A&P you should be in good shape for the biology requirement.

Seems like someone at the school could give you some pretty definite advice on the algebra and chemistry. If you haven't taken an algebra course in high school, that might be a problem but if you made it through pharmacology wo algebra you probably have learned enough to get by. I haven't seen any programs which don't require organic chemistry and I have found it very helpful in understanding the physiology and pharmacology. Organic chem was also WAY easier than general chemistry although most schools want you to have general chem before taking organic. But there are some schools, especially community colleges, that will let you take organic w/o general chem.

Bottom line though is what your local school will allow. All the CC's I know of have waiting lists 2 or 3 years long. Under those conditions it would seem as if they would be less inclined to compromise on prerequisites. It never hurts to ask. What do have to lose?

I wouldn't imagine them waiving chem or math requirements as they don't fit in anywhere else w/your previous classes and some of the information you get in those classes is VITAL to your nursing school studies....but of course, the best bet is to check directly with the school(s) you are looking in to....they, quite frankly, won't care what we think, lol!!

Ask about CLEPing out of chem and math if the school accepts them and I'm surprised they aren't asking for microbiology also. Let us know what you find out. Good luck, Jules

You will definitely need the chemistry, but it should be at the high school level. If you have taken high school algebra you might be able to pass the basic math and algebra test they give you. If you do then you might not have to take developmental algebra that is required should you fail those tests. You will also need microbiology on the college level.

My school lets us apply and then continue with the pre-reqs while awaiting acceptance. I would check and see if your school allows for this as well.
