How have you done in other science courses? Is it possible that you and the instructor are not a good fit? Are you going into the tests and finding unexpected questions? Why do you want to be a nurse? I love chemistry but nearly flunked it the first time I took it just b/c the teacher was a butt and put questions on the test that were totally unrelated to the lectures, and worded them poorly.

I personally don't really like my A&P classes, they're too dry. If they were taught like case studies I'd be able to really get into it. It doesn't help that this is my third time taking some of these classes b/c credits were too old. Luckily I know many RN's who went to the same school as I'm at now and they were able to recommend instructors who I'd be able to get along with, and have had me steer clear of others.

I don't really think of nursing courses as science courses. While some anatomy and math is involved, it's mostly about, well, nursing. The most science oriented courses in my LPN courses are anatomy, pharmacology, and nutrition. But, these are mostly about memorization, not problem-solving, etc.

I think study skills are really important-you need to find a way to learn so that you have the material memorized. After you memorize it, you need to be able to "use" it on critical thinking-type exams. It's very difficult. I've taken science courses (biology/chemistry/anatomy/micro, etc.), and if I studied to learn the material, I was pretty sure to do fine on the exam. In nursing, I'm worried going into every exam even though I study like crazy. It does get better, though, as learning to think for nursing exams is something to learn in and of itself.

You need to ask yourself if you want to be a nurse. If you TRULY want to be a nurse, you'll do it. You may have to make tough choices-perhaps not work so much if you do, or get a tutor, etc. When you study, you need to watch as to whether you are ACTUALLY studying, or sitting there looking/reading half-there. I find this is important for me-not to count the time I'm not truly studying wholeheartedly. It's pretty crazy-all about quality, not quantity (though quantity there a lot too)!

Don't let one semester hold you back from your dreams. It's a very small setback in the bigger picture-if you want to be a nurse.

Hi there! :wink2:Even though you find that A/Por whatever subject that may not be an area that you are strong in, you have to stay positive. What I'm hearing is that you have already convinced yourself you are going to fail. STOP!:imbar Re-evaluate how you are studying. Ask yourself, how do I learn? Sometimes the way you think you learn may not be the best way for you to retain what is being taught. How are you taking notes, highlighting in your text or are you reading? You may have to do all of the above. :up:If you know infact this is your weak area you may have to spend more time studying, reading...etc.:typing

Stay positive and stay encouraged.:loveya:

what an encouraging note :).... that is what i really honestly needed! thank you for that. i decided that i'm gonna stick it out and still be in the nursing program because it's truely my dream and if i make it through, i will be the happiest person in the world!!!! :) i'm gonna work my butt off and get it into gear!! ;)

I'm glad you are sticking it out. I felt the same way you did and although I HATED my A&P class, I'm glad I hung in there and finished PN school!
