Has anyone gotten a decision letter? I called last Friday, and she said she was working on them.
Anxiously waiting!
Congratulations! Nursing school credits are not at all like regular college credits. Those 4 and 12 credits will have A LOT of work to go with them. Trust me. The optional class is quite helpful in learning how to read and answer NCLEX style questions. Good luck to you both :) and congratulations
Optional class it is, tripleoxer! I admit, I was wondering whether it would be worth driving in to the college for an extra day. Coulda had Monday without driving. Are the first quarter clinicals usually on the weekends? Evenings? Where?
I know I'll probably find out on June 4th but I'm hungry for all the info I can get. Including book costs. (Gulp.)
Thanks for your advice!
If you go to the website and look under bookstore, then textbooks, and select fall term and nursing, there is a list of textbooks. It is long. I'm buying used. This way we can shop around ahead of time. Background check online was $67....
I looked at the bookstore, selected fall term and nursing and ended up here:
Search by Course | Buy Textbooks | Shoreline Community College Bookstore?
For each class I selected, I got a message that the instructor hadn't yet chosen the text. Would you mind posting a link to the book list or the list itself? You're smart to get a jump on used books, I think.
Under the Nursing 10 quarter course 121, there is a list. It isn't up for your program yet (which I had not checked). I'm going to wait until after orientation to start shopping, but it is fun to look at the list. I have already read an older edition of How to Survive and Maybe Even Love Nursing School. I think it is a check-out-from-the-library type of book.....interesting to read, but not worth buying.
The class schedule (days/times) could change from what they have posted right now on the website. That happens frequently as they work on staffing. It will be more concrete after you have your orientation. It also depends on what kind of learner you are. You may look through the "Test Success: Test Taking Techniques for Beginning Nursing Students" by Nugent and Vitale (6th edition is what I have). That was the text we used when I started in 2010. You basically just read through the chapters and go over test questions in class. The class is just overall there for "support" too, being new in nursing school. You can ask questions and such. I personally would probably not take the class again if it came up because I can just read those chapters and get the idea of what they are saying. Some people like the extra discussion and practice that comes with that additional class. It really depends on what kind of learner you are. They also discuss what resources are available to you on campus and study methods.
As for books, I would definitely buy used and probably not from the bookstore. Use amazon or another used textbook website. The first 2 quarters I bought the current editions, after that I figured I could just buy the previous addition and save a ton of money with a little older edition.
Two books which are not on the required list, but are very helpful are: "Skills in Clinical Nursing by Berman, Snyder, and Jackson. Very helpful easy to follow information on the things you will be doing in skills lab. There is no skills lab book, it is online. So this book is very helpful to have to refer to. And the other book that we all like is "Nursing Care Plans: Nursing Diagnosis and Intervention" by Gulanick/Myers. This has really good care plans in it for when you are writing your papers for clinicals.
Journey of Hope, I may meet you at the orientation as I am a current 10 qtr cohort. They have some of us come to the orientation to say hi and answer questions. Can't wait to pass the torch!

Congratulations and well done, JourneyofHope! So glad you got just what you wanted. I felt sure you would since your points were enough to get you into the full-time program but there is nothing like confirmation.
You're going to be a nurse!!!
