Shoes for clinicals?

Published

Hi, I'm starting nursing school in the fall, and recently got my huge laundry list of things I'll need to buy for the upcoming year (the tab is reaching $500, I'm not kidding).

Aside from the prospect of being broke before even starting school, I'm uncertain about what kind of shoes to get for clinicals. They have to be white, non-skid, non-porous, no clogs or tennis shoes, etc.

What kind of shoes did you buy?

Take this advice to heart...I suffer from serious foot issues. I waited tables so long I think my feet are permenantly damaged.

After the last incident with my feet I finally had to go to the Dr.; I couldn't bear weight on my right foot. I was told to go visit a podiatrist for orthotic inserts. Please, I am a nursing student and cannot afford such luxuries.

I went to a place in the mall called "The Walking Company".The had me stand on some mat in which the computer "read" the pressures points of my feet. The sales associates then fit me with the proper insert for my feet.

It was the BEST $60.00 that I spent. I can wear ANY shoe for any length of time and my feet don't hurt. Even my 4 inch heels, which I live in now. You can buy a cheap pair of shoes throw in the inserts and you are all set. These inserts are interchangable, you can move them from one pair to the next. Well worth the money.:yeah:

What a fabulous idea! Do you have to buy a 1/2 size larger shoe to comfortably fit the insert or do they work with your regular size shoes? I just imagine that the insert might be thick and require extra space.

I had (well, still have them) a pair of Danskos, but I can't wear them anymore. I never felt steady and the amount of times I almost rolled my ankles was pretty high (considering I only wore them to 2-3 clinicals).

Ended up getting a pair of slip on Nurse Mates (think they're the Dove style). I love 'em. Super comfy.

After extremely painful days on my feet, I went with Reeboks. They were the only ones that laced tight enough and distributed the weight of my feet properly. I also found arch support socks. Wow! they made all the difference. I use no-nonsense made with bamboo fibers. They offer firm support of my arches no matter what shoe I wear. The bamboo is moister wicking and odor resistant.

i agree with the others... don't skimp on shoes! i was very limited due to our restrictions (no clogs, crocks, sneakers, slipons, etc) the practical side of me knows that comfort is everything, the sassy side of me couldn't bear the thought of wearing the same lace up style that my grandmother wore 35 years ago! i found a realllly cute pair of cherokees that are amazingly comfortable and only $40.00! (which to me is a ton of money for shoes, but compared to some of the other brands, really not so bad) they are very cushiony and springy. really the best thing to do is set aside some time and walk around the store in every brand they have. don't feel rushed, your feet will thank you later!

Any suggestions for someone with big, fat, wide, barge-like feet AND high arches? I have my favorite running/walking shoes, but they are fabric and have silver detailing on them. Not nursing material!

I bought a pair of NurseMates in this style (Dove): http://www.nursemates.com/StyleDisplay.asp?Style=229900&CategoryID=50

They are SUPER comfortable and extremely lightweight with great arch support. And I love them because they are slip on (but fully-enclosed!) and you don't have to worry about shoe laces coming untied or anything like that. My shoes have to be all-white too and I was a little worried about the blue heart on the shoe but my uniform pants cover them so it's fine. If anything I guess you could get some white nail polish or white-out or something and cover the heart with it!

I just got a pair of all white Nike Shox....LOVE THEM....they cost me about $110 from footlocker.com.....I'd been wanting a pair of shox for a long time though...

You do not have to buy a smaller size. You take the inserts that originally come with the shoes out and put the new ones in. I hope this helps. Good Luck!!!

try Nike Shox and use the optional blue arch inserts (they come with them, but not attached). I have arch issues and I use the base sole then the arch inserts, then a pair of generic walmart type working woman inserts over it and they were really uncomfortable for the first 24 hours (which was why I got the extra inserts) but once I broke them in, they were PERFECT.

I got a pair of guys all white leather (no silver symbols or anything) and they really dont look any different than the cherokee or some of the nursemates that I have seen.

My school said "no clogs, no crocs, nothing w/out a back, all white, leather" so thats what I got. They're a lot like z-coils in that they have coils at the heel (but 4 instead of 1) and they are SOOO shock absorbant. I work in a hospital and you can't even tell that you're on that hard solid floor all day long. I wear them pretty much 24-7 so I'm probably going to have to get a second pair just because I'm getting them filthy not ever taking them off, lol.

We get to where all navy scrubs this year!!! No more white pants!!! Yeah!

John

We get to wear navy this year too!!! I am beyond thrilled!!!:yeah:

I vote for Danskos.

A bit spendy (Around $110), but worth it to me. I have not had sore feet at all with them. I was told about them from another student who was familiar with them in the restaurant industry when workers are on their feet all day on cement floors. Then I started to notice what people on their feet all day were wearing--yep, Danskos.

If you choose them, I would suggest trying them on. I went to one store at the mall and the shoes didn't fit right, couldn't get my heel in. It was really strange. I went to a different store across town, and no problem, fit perfect. Because I was buying white, I was asked if I was a nurse, I said I was a "student nurse"--and received a student discount of 10%. Doesn't hurt to ask about discounts!!!

I like the Danskos so much, I'm saving up to buy a darker color to wear to school with jeans. I love not having to tie laces! :p They are basically slip-ons, but have a closed heal and easy to wipe off leather surface.

My:twocents:..
