Shoe Suggestions and Earpiece Thoughts.....

Published

What do you guys consider the best shoes, our instructor says "absolutely no sitting AT ALL"....which is understandable, but painful after the 4th-5th-6th hour. Any suggestions on clogs or a certain shoe type or brand that you find gives the best support. My nike's are not working for me anymore!!

Also, we HAVE to wear our earpieces. Annoying at times, but I see the point. Do any of you use your earpiece, what do you think of earpieces? We had ours made by a drug rep for free, but i've heard the more expensive ones are better.

Thanks guys, TONS OF RESPECT to you all, cause SKOOL IS HARD RIGHT NOW!!:crying2: :crying2:

Shoes for Crews should be sold at a discount for all medical personnel because they virtually eliminate slip and fall accidents.

Z-coils - the ONLY way to go in my mind and I've tried them all. Good luck.

I thank God every time I see stupid Nurse Instructors like this that my educators were so wonderful! I used to work in a PACU where the old bags (I'm an old bag now...but no nasty) - anyway they actually removed all the chairs from the PACU because they said "Recovery Room Nurses Don't Sit!". Well... I was 20 years younger at the time and I used to hop up and sit on the counter top which they also hated of course but they couldn't remove it!! And they couldn't get their big butts up there either - just like I can't get my big butt up there anymore!!

My advice on shoes - try on many and buy the most comfortable - regardless of cost. It's the one thing you don't go cheap on. Get shoes with good arch (sp?) support and sole padding.

I have a question - what's the ear thing you have to use? What is that?

Eilleen.

The ear piece is for a precordial stethoscope that anesthesia providers use. Basically it is a mold like a hearing aid (I actually had mine made at a hearing clinic) with a tube attached. You can attach the tube to either a bell placed on the patient's chest or to an esophageal temp probe/stethoscope.

The molded ear piece decreases extraneous noises and allows the anesthetist to continuously auscultate breath sounds and heart sounds. I think it is an important tool in anesthesia. Hope this answers the question.

Yah, it does. What a pain that you would have to have that in all the time. That is so stupid. Don't they think you'll know enough to put it in when you need it? Geez.............

Interesting that someone that does not do anesthesia feels qualified to call something stupid that is considered a standard of care in many facilities.

:) Gee, so sorry to have insulted you in any way. I honestly didn't know I was in the CRNA area. You're right I'm not a CRNA. I'm an ER RN as well as an OR RN and it's equipment I have never seen used in either country. I have worked with many CRNA's though in the US and they are usually really nice people. Sorry to have accidently stepped in the CRNA area.:)

Yes, thank you it does. I have to say that I didn't realize this was an anesthesia forum - I came here by way of an external link - so that explains my confusion. Sounds like a great method for listening to your patient. I'm assuming you only use one ear at a time so you can also monitor the surgeons?

NEW shoes are the most important--Nikes and others with gel or air loose all bounce in about 6 months. Current choice: sketchers are firm soles

Please explain what type of earpiece you discussed.

Just FYI, there's a few AAs and MDAs who read and post on this CRNA forum. jwk is an AA.

I have a pair of Merrell slip on shoes that work great. My feet never hurt after being on them all day

Thanks for clarifying that for everyone - wouldn't want them to forget about me.:)

AA or CRNA (or MDA), last time I checked, all of us wore shoes, and most use earpieces at one time or another.
