Shoe Suggestions and Earpiece Thoughts.....

Published

What do you guys consider the best shoes, our instructor says "absolutely no sitting AT ALL"....which is understandable, but painful after the 4th-5th-6th hour. Any suggestions on clogs or a certain shoe type or brand that you find gives the best support. My nike's are not working for me anymore!!

Also, we HAVE to wear our earpieces. Annoying at times, but I see the point. Do any of you use your earpiece, what do you think of earpieces? We had ours made by a drug rep for free, but i've heard the more expensive ones are better.

Thanks guys, TONS OF RESPECT to you all, cause SKOOL IS HARD RIGHT NOW!!:crying2: :crying2:

That is so dumb, the no sitting rule, that is. Oh well, I wear Birkenstocks, a little pricey but well worth it. I was wearing New Balance shoes, which my podiatrist likes, but they started hurting me too. Haven't had any problems with Birkenstocks.

That is so unrealistic of your instructor. A smart nurse (or anyone who works a job where you are on your feet for much of the time) will and should sit down whenever the opportunity presents itself. It won't be often, but we should definitely take advantage of it. Otherwise, our feet will not last for the next 40 working years. As nurses, we are obligated to take care of ourselves as best we can, in order to be in top notch condition for our work.

As for the shoes, I wear Saucony running shoes, and they do the best for me. But no shoe will keep feet from hurting when you are on them continuously for 8 or more hours. Got to sit for a few minutes every now and then.

although not a srna yet.....(in application process) out of all the years i have been a nurse I have tried everything! from nike, new balance to birkenstocks and danskos....my absolute favorite no matter how bad a shift are merrills. i tried birkenstocks and for two years in a busy ER they were fine...and then all of a sudden after a few hours they would begin to hurt. My dansko clogs are great for 4-8 hours shifts, but they begin to hurt at the 8 hour point. my merrills are the topo slide clog and i can pull 12 hours+ and still feel like i am walking on air..they cost either 69 or79 bucks and can be ordered online thru tafford.com.

Good luck!

Please tell us you are exaggerating.

Aspiring SRNAs, look at this statement closely and remember this as you are researching schools to attend. I cannot imagine that a program this rigid is going to be very accommodating when issues arise. I agree that SRNAs new to clinical need to be very active observers and especially vigilant, but even so, this sounds more like punishment than education.

Having said that, clogs with a hard sole are the best. And I have tried the negative-heel technology from Earth shoes and it is terrific.

Precordials are great for peds, procedures with position changes intra-op, prone positioning, and deep MACs. I have a custom one that works well.

Buck up and spend the money for a custom one only if the one you have is of poor quality.

I have the drug rep earpiece and it works great. When you first start wearing it, you might think it sucks, but that's only because you are training your ear to hear the subtleties.

As for standing on your feet... I can understand the point, but a bit harsh in my opinion.

I bought Birks... I like them, but amazingly they rubbed my lateral foot and gave me a tailor's bunion. My bunion and shoe have now become one, but I'm still not really that happy with the sole.

I love my Danskos...a little expensive (about 110 a pair) but my feet have not hurt since I put them on.

zcoils!! hands down in my book. kind of ugly, but woth it.

check it out. http://www.zcoil.com

I love my birkenstocks...they were 140.00 but well worth it. My feet have not hurt at all since i have gotten them. A lot of people that i know wear Merrell's. Good luck and don't skimp...your feet are your lifeline.

You have got to be kidding about not sitting. I was taught the opposite--sit for inductions, look relaxed and in control. Now, I sit, I stand, I do Yoga, when I am comfortable it is better for the patient.

As far as shoes go, I love Earth Shoes. They can be found on the net and in selected stores.

Thanks guys, wow, im surprised at your reaction to the "no sitting" rule. It was actually given by our MDA Director. He said "if the surgeons don't sit, you don't sit"....oh well. Im just a student, on the very bottom of the totem pole.....as one crna told me...."dance to the beat of the drum, until you can make your own music". I know it's not what happens in the "real world", but it IS school, so Im bowing down....(or over):chuckle :chuckle

Why does this not surprise me? What a shame. I wonder if the director follows this rule. Somehow I doubt it.
