Hello Everyone,
I am currently investigating LPN programs in Florida and have narrowed it down to Sheridan Tech. Does anyone have any valuable information to share regarding this program? I am looking to begin this summer.

Hi!! I was thinking of enrolling into Sheridan for the January term. Did you decide to attend? If so, how is it & was it worth it? If anyone has any information on the scheduling & what classes are like, do share! Any info provided is greatly appreciated:thankya:

I'm currently applying for McFatter Tech's LPN program, but since it's all part of Broward County Schools, the cost is the same at all three schools (McFatter, Atlantic and Sheridan). The entire cost for the LPN program is approx $3,129.
I don't know about Sheridan or Atlantic, but at McFatter, you take a Health Careers Core class during the first term. It's 5 weeks, costing $239 and the class can either be taken on campus or online (with a few on-campus evening meetings). I've chosen the online version, as this allows me to continue to work full time and put away some extra money for the LPN program (which I hope to start in January).
RN programs in this area seem ridiculously difficult to get into. I've looked at MDC, BC, PBCC, FAU, FIU etc. I totally understand where the OP is coming from. I too feel that LPN is the best route, as it provides me with practical experience/education at a low cost without an unreasonable wait... and ultimately, the ability to work in healthcare in a year.
Fallon, good luck to you!
If all goes well, we'll both be LPNs by early 2010! Woohoo!

Can't speak about Sheridan's program, but I am sure all three programs are similar. I met with the program counselor for McFatter and I can tell you that their program has the following start dates: Jan 20th, March 30th or June 8th. There are two full time programs (1 year in length) either M-F 8:00 am to 2:30 pm or M-Th 2:00 pm to 10:00 pm. There is also a part time program starting Jan 20th or Oct 27th that is 21 months in length... UGH! This class meets M, W and Th from 5:00 pm to 10:00 pm.
Applications are accepted on a first come, first serve basis. No waiting lists. As long as you pass the TABE test, have acceptable scores in the TEAS and complete your core class, background check, drug test and physical... you are in.
So obviously, the sooner you turn in your application and meet all the requirements, the better. Applicants don't find out if they have been accepted until approx 1 month before class starts. (I am shooting for Jan 20th start date... was told the deadline to complete all requirements is Dec 15th and acceptance notice is given shortly thereafter.)
I found it difficult to obtain information on the PN program over the phone... so you may want to go to Sheridan in person to inquire. Whatever you decide to do... good luck to you!
Thanks soooo much for this info. You're absolutle right about not being able to obtain anything over the phone. I 2 thought about McFatter However, I decided to go with Sheridan as it is closer to my home(gas prices & all) ,lol. The core class, is it offered there as well? & have you taken it? if so, how was it? Have you taken the TEAS? I bought the LPN/LVN Pre-Entrance Exam book to get some practice, have you been preparing? I'm very excited if you can't tell. Again thanks for everything!!
I totally understand that. I decided on McFatter since it's practically across the street. It's really a 1/2 mile away but that's walking or biking distance... at least during the days when we are in class. Looking for ways to save as much as possible during the program.
Not sure about the core classes in Sheridan, but look at their course schedule to see if this course is separated: http://www.sheridantechnical.com/FieldsofStudy/CourseSchedule/tabid/329/Default.aspx
As for the TEAS, I have not taken it yet... scheduled to take it this Wednesday. My only concern with it is the science part since I'm a bit rusty. I've been reviewing basic concepts with the TEAS study guide (available at the school bookstore). My counselor however told me not to worry about it, that I should be able to pass it without any problems. She said most people fail out on the English section. If that holds true, I should not have any problems... I hope.
Once I got the TEAS completed, I am done with my entire application process.... already been poked, prodded and fingerprinted.
I'll let you know what the test is like Wednesday night! :)

Hello there!! Thanks for the school link. Basically I need to go to orientation, schedule the TABE & TEAS & get poked, prodded & fingerinted! Long story short, I need to do everything. I was trying to give myself enough time to practice as math is my worst subject. We just don't see eye 2 eye:smackingf. I'll overcome it though!! Good luck to you on the test although I'm sure you will do great!! Don't forget to keep me posted! Once we're both excepted maybe we can be study buddies! :bdyhdclp:
Fallon, I passed the TEAS on my first shot! I am so relieved!
The sad part... my lowest score was in the English section, but still exceeded the required program minimum. Haha! Regardless, it is done and over with! YAY! All I have to do now is wait for the acceptance letter.
I found all of the sections of the test to be fairly easy. However, I would recommend that you review measurement conversions for math and basic chemistry.
The rest of the questions on the science section were basic life science, scientific reasoning, physical science and human body science. I am sure you will do great on the test! Good luck and keep me updated on your progress! :)
:ancong!:on your success!! What is about the English portion? Is it realy that bothersome? You're not the only person I've heard say that same thing. Out of curiousity what is the passing score? I'm really nervous about the math, I have been studying though. I hope to take the TABE next week. Are the TABE & TEAS anything alike? I'm sooooo nervous, I always get like this with any test. I'll let you know how things go. Receiving your acceptance letter will be an awesone Christmas gift, don't you agree??!! Talk to you soon:wink2:
LOL you wanna talk about test anxiety? Listen to this.... The exam started with reading comprehension and it displayed a map on the screen, along with a scale to show approximate mileage / kilometers. The very first question asked me to estimate the distance between the western border of Algeria to its eastern border. I kid you not... Algeria was right smack in the center of the map and it was the BIGGEST country there. I kept looking at the map and I just didn't see it. At all! Haha. I kept asking myself "WTH is Algeria?". I decided to skip it.
After answering the last question on this section, I had time to review my answers. I was feeling less anxious by then, so I went back to question #1. I nearly fell over when I FINALLY saw where Algeria was. How could I miss something so obvious??? :chuckle So learn from my mishap.... relax! Test anxiety kills.
The portion of the English section that sunk my grade was punctuation. There were way too many questions asking if certain sentences/ paragraphs should be rewritten (adding, moving, deleting commas, semicolons, etc) or left as-is. This is were I performed the worst.
The minimum requirement on the TEAS at McFatter is obtaining a performance score exceeding the 40th percentile on every section of the exam. This doesn't mean you only have to get 40% right. Instead the percentile ranking shows how well you perform compared to everyone else that takes the test. Trust me, I far exceeded the 40th percentile requirement on every section... it is not difficult to do!
As for the TABE... don't sweat it! Seriously! The TABE is really, really easy. Nothing at all like the TEAS. I believe the purpose of TABE is to demonstrate that you are able to perform academically at a high school level + and are ready for adult level classes. Just brush up on the basics and you should be ok. You can also try a review website like this one: http://www.testprepreview.com/tabe_practice.htm
Definitely take the TABE test as soon as you can. You may still have time to register for core before the end of the year... and if all goes well, you can start the PN program in January! Remember after completing all steps and meeting the requirements, its first come first served!
Oh and I have a contact for you at Sheridan, Lilian 754-321-5480. I think she's the Program Counselor. Just leave a message for her and she'll call you right back.
An acceptance letter for Jan would be the best Christmas gift ever!
*fingers crossed*
OMG..... That' so crazy! That's exactly what I'm talking about. I make such simple mistakes like that, I swear. This is why I get so nervous because I know that I'm so capable of doing well, it's just I rush & overlook things (the simplest of things at that)!!! I will definitely take your advice. Thanks for the contact @ Sheridan. I'll call her tomorrow. I actually like the McFatter schedule of 8-2:30, this is awesome. I'm a single parent of 2 (ages 11- middle school & 2- preschool) so trying to get to school @ 7:15 in the am is going to be ridiculously hectic:scrm:. I don't want to start out on the wrong foot with my professor by walking in the classroom LATE! But then there's that whole gas thing ya know. Decisions, decisions, decisions. We'll see what happens once I've tested. Did you get your scores as soon as you finished? Or did you have to wait until the next day? Well I'm sure Lilian will let me know... that's if I can actually get her on the phone, lol! & by the way, I have been reviewing that practice test site & it's very helpful. Well it's back to the books....didn't do much reviewing or refreshing in my case last night. Wish me luck on my TABE

Thanks so much for the update. I am currently enrolled in A&P I, so I was trying to focus on that before I took the Teas, but if I am not mistaken, Sheridan only requires a 40% to be accepted, so I think that I should be okay. I am going to take the test next month and then go from there.
