Hello ! So I'm in a pickle on deciding which nursing program to go to. I got accepted to the SJSU program for Fall 2013 and the SFSU program for Spring 2014.

Here's the info I have on both.

SJSU:

3 year program

94% nclex pass rate

Tuition: $3.7k per year

Preceptorship during senior year (I hear its good for experience and future jobs?)

SFSU:

2 year program

88% nclex pass rate

Tuition: $3.2k per year

No preceptorship (I believe it was cut out of the curriculum)

Higher rent

Both I would have to move closer and for SFSU I would have to still take a Fall 2013 class there to maintain my admission status. Is there any other information I should consider? I don't know which school has better professors or clinicals. Thanks for all your opinions! :)

Just looking at what info you were able to gather here, the answer seems pretty obvious. SJSU is the better program, by a long shot. If I had a choice, I would definitely choose SJSU. You are right that it is a longer program, but the preceptorship is so important to your career! Think of all of the networking possibilities! Also, you could start right away, and not have to wait a semester! Additionally, SJSU is consistently ranked as one of the top 5 nursing programs in the state, up there with UCSF's graduate program. The campus is much nicer than SFSU's, and the rent in the area will be much more reasonable. Plus, it's much easier to navigate through San Jose than SFSU by car. Finally, the NCLEX pass rate has been consistently higher for SJSU than for SFSU. Just my two cents, hope it helps! Congrats again! :)

No preceptorship? Really?

I would have chosen CSUEB, but I guess that isn't an option... I don't think SJSU has the greatest reputation but if SFSU doesn't have a preceptorship anymore, then definitely SJSU. I feel like half of my learning in nursing school took place during preceptorship.

I have never attended SJSU but I spent a semester and a summer taking prerequisite classes at SFSU.

I loved my professors at SFSU. One of them I keep in touch with and she gave me letters of recommendation. I also had a grad-student teacher for a class there, and she was also great. She was the same age as many students so she was very relatable and understanding. None of my classes were more than 30 students. The majority of which were either already in nursing, pre-nursing, or kinesiology majors. I found it helpful that my fellow students were not only in the same boat as me, but also very studious and hardworking. I can't say the same for the classes I took at community college where I got annoyed at all the delinquent students asking to copy my homework and such. I drove to campus and found that once you get into of routine of where to find parking it's really not bad at all. Anyway, that is my experience with SFSU!

I personally loved SFSU. But, considering SJSU has preceptorship, I would go with that if all other factors are similar.

Congratulations by the way :)

Thanks everyone for replying! :) I did indeed pick SJSU !
