SFSU/Sequoia program 2015

Nursing Students General Students

Published

Hi. I was looking around on here for any current threads about the current admission cycle for the BSN program to SFSU/Sequoia. I didn't see anything recent so figured I'd start a topic.

I have an interview coming up for fall admission and wanted to see in anyone had some advice who had gone through this interview process? I'm pretty nervous...

Also, any other information about the program would be awesome.

Thanks,

Kym

Hi spacemonster!

I saw your PM and also sent you a text IRL :) I was not allowed to respond to the PM directly as I don't have enough posts on AN yet; that will probably change soon :)

Regarding schedules.... I spoke to Stacie who is a graduate nurse on my unit and Cohort X President of NSA and when their Cohort began, they were not notified of their class and clinical schedule until the first week of August... Yikes. :I I saw floating around that our nursing orientation will be late July? This makes me glad as I will be coming home right then from a medical mission! Perhaps at this time our schedules and classes will be organized and distributed. Purely speculation. I was told by Sheri that it does take a while to secure clinical locations as we are competing with about 10 other bay area schools for clinical sites, equaling hundreds of undergrad and graduate nursing students!

However, I found the SFSU schedule generator from mySFSU. The application is called Gator Scheduler.

I was looking at the classes from first semester to plug into the search engine; you can find the full curriculum here: http://www.nursing.sfsu.edu/sites/sites7.sfsu.edu.nursing/files/Sequoia_New_Nursing_Curriculum_Roadmap.pdf

You can also play around with your class schedule: https://sfsu.collegescheduler.com/spa#terms/Fall%202015/options

I think that these classes may only apply to the main campus... I'm not sure if we have the same class schedule as main campus as all our theory and lecture will take place at Canada. We do follow the same academic calendar as SFSU though. Very rarely do some of the SIM lab check offs occur at main campus for us, as we have pretty nice facilities right at Canada. Sheri also told me we will start our clinical rotation about 5 weeks into the semester after our first skills check-off. With the implementation of the new curriculum, we are back to starting in a SNF (skilled nursing facility) to practice the fundamentals of nursing care on residents. Helps some of our folks with non-medical backgrounds get their feet wet and ease us all into the world of nursing. We will also be participating in community health fairs as part of our wellness and health promotion rotation. This I am particularly excited about, as I would love to go into public health nursing!

To those of you who feel you can balance work and school along with other commitments, but are not CNA certified, I highly suggest looking into working as a tech during nursing school. I have been a CNA for about 2 years and have seen a lot in the hospital setting! It's really invaluable experience, and most of the nurses I've met love to teach and show stuff to students. After you complete your first semester of nursing school, you are eligible to test for and become certified as a nurse aide in CA without having to take the class. It's really invaluable experience :)

Hopes that helps! Cheers space monster and all

Hi Jen!

I have a few more updates about our program in my reply to space monster that will I hope you will find helpful!

I am working most weekdays in June at Sequoia (7am-3pm shift) but my schedule is also free most weekends including the 13/14.

Thank you so much Taraflesner for the information, especially the CNA tip. Pardon my ignorance, but is a tech the same as a CNA or does one become a tech first and then a CNA once certified?

We should all plan something for that June weekend. I'm open any time. Are there good times of day for you all?

Jen

Hi guys. We/weekend of 13/14 June works just fine for me. I also cannot pm yet. Did everyone see the email today from the school about the orientations? It seems that Sequoia cohort doesn't need to attend the orientation at SFSU main campus, but that there are two at the end of August for us in particular. Looking forward to those. I just wish I knew our schedules NOW! lol

Kym

I hear you, Kym! Anyone else confused by the orientation email? It mentioned a "mandatory" orientation at SF State in July, but then said the SF State orientation is optional. Are there two, with one being mandatory and the other optional? Confused!

Thanks for the info, Tara! I also noticed that you can go to the College of Extended Learning site (College of Extended Learning : San Francisco State University : Bay Area, California Continuing Education : Extension Classes + Certificates : SF State : SFSU) -- our program is run through the CEL -- and then click on "SF State Class Schedule" in the right-hand column. On the search page, select "CEL Academic Credit Session" under Session and "Nursing" under Subject. The results will show the current spring schedules for the Sequoia program which it least gives us a rough idea of start times.

The best time for me to meet is in the afternoon on Sunday the 14, if that works for other folks. Should we meet in RWC? I can PM everyone who is interested, collect email addresses, and send out a group email so we can organize off-site.

that date/time works for me.

works for me too. Yes, PMing is good or you could also send an email to all those who received the "save the dates!" email. Thanks for sending it.

Hi All,

That date works for me too, let me know where we will meet.

Regarding the email, I was confused too, but I believe there are 2 orientations. One for SFSU that you have to pay for that we are not required to go to and the other mandatory for the nursing program that will be held as SFSU (with info regarding background screening, registration, etc). My friend that got into the BS SFSU campus program just got an email tonight and it stated that on July 28, 2015 from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm, there will be a mandatory orientation for students who will begin the nursing program this fall semester. I am not sure if this is the date for OURS, but I though I would share it with you in case it is. It sort of makes sense that this will be our date too since it's essentially the same program and we will need to have all the same requirements.

Cheers to Cohort X11!

Yes, according to the email sent from [email protected], that is the date for the mandatory orientation for ALL Nursing students at SFSU, regardless of either program( main campus and Canada campus).

And @spacemonster, the link you provided for checking out our classes work, but I only can view Summer courses, which currently have a TBA on days/times. I'm guessing that spring semester is over, thats why it got removed.

But thanks for the link anyway!

Hi! I am applying for the Fall 2016 Cohort! I wanted to see if anyone had feedback about their experience applying and or in the program! This is my first choice! Thanks!

Congratulations!!! I know this is an old thread, but how did your prerequisite and TeAS Score look?
