Hey guys ,
please post your stats here if you're applying to sfsu nursing program so we can have an idea about how competitive this cohort is ? Do you know If they accept for both fall and spring ?
Thank you and good luck
I am so happy I got in!! I now have to make a choice between SF State and Sac State (way cheaper to live there)... I would love to go to SF state, but I am worried about the cost of living in SF. Which areas are more affordable?
Hi Anais-b, congrats, Im in the same boat as you, its also between Sac and SF for me, although I also got in Stanislaus lol. I live in northern CA so I already eliminated Stanislaus. However, I am still favoring SF because I have heard how hard it is to get a job at Sac since I know someone who just graduated from CSUS with a BSN degree. In contrast, SF and they bay has more job opportunities so I think its definitely worth to spend a little more on housing for the atmosphere and my future at SF. tough decision right lol... Cant way to see all of you this fall, good luck to everyone waiting :)
@ Anais-b: I did my pre-nursing in SF, and it is a wonderful city to live in. However, the cost of living is truly ridiculous. I ended up working 30 hours a week as a server to pay my bills. I averaged 5 hours of sleep a night and it showed in both my grades and my long-term retention. If you don't mind living in an overcrowded apartment (usually about 7 people in 2-3 bedrooms+ a living room converted into a bedroom and 1 bath, with frequently changing renters), you can find considerably cheaper rent, but I can't function well in those situations. I don't know, maybe you can. It's also a bit cheaper if you share an apartment in a less desirable part of town (although often the roommate has a lot of rules, like not allowing many visitors), or if you don't mind not having a kitchen (at which point eating out gets quite spendy). If I hadn't finally gotten a much higher-paying server job and a rent-controlled apartment in a sketchy part of town ($1060/month for a 19x10 foot I share with my fiancé), I wouldn't consider living here and going to nursing school. As much as I love living in SF, I just don't think I could keep my grades up enough. If you're on your own financially, you really need to consider how the compromised living arrangements or the number of hours you'll need to work here will affect your ability to focus on school.
If you do decide to live here, I recommend Ingleside or Sunset, because they're pretty good neighborhoods (not very sketchy), more affordable (some bedrooms in shared apartments only in the $700's), and close to SFSU. They are very cold and foggy much of the time tho, compared to the other places in SF where I have lived (I have lived in both these neighborhoods before). The tenderloin is affordable (comparatively) and is likely to come up in your searches, but unless you're used to living in neighborhoods where people drink and use hard drugs on the street, you will want to avoid this area. The Bayview, Hunter's Point, and Visitation Valley neighborhoods are also very rough. I suggest you check out CrimeMapping.com - National Map to see what you would be in for in the different neighborhoods. You need to adjust the dates to show you last November tho, because for some reason none of the crimes since then are in their system yet. And head's up, every leaseholder I know has good credit; if you don't, it will be incredibly hard to get a place of your own or be the leaseholder in a shared situation and you will have to live by someone else's rules.
I've lived in SF for 5 1/2 years now, so if you have any questions, feel free to ask. I'll be checking this forum for at least a few days, but probably a lot longer. Good luck finding your ideal situation. :)
Did any waitlisted students here get an email from the School about their alternate major yet? were you able to accept or deny the offer ?
I called SFSU admissions and the woman said we should be getting our official alternate major acceptances this week (as in, the week starting tomorrow), after which we will have an extended period of time to accept. I'm 95% sure she said 2 weeks, but I can't find where I wrote it down so I can't be positive.
Waitlist #28/100@ Pkham, Thanks for the info. Where did you hear that?
I followed the 2014 sfsu bsn thread from last year and even though it's under online nursing schools, I'm pretty sure it's for the same program. I believe it's on page 23 where a #56 waitlist got in which leaves me to believe even higher than that can get in with a little luck, so like I said, keep thinking positive thoughts.

I have a 4.0 prereq, and I'm not sure how they calculate overall because if they count every repeated class I'm under a 3.0 but if they don't then I'm at a 4.0. I also have multi cultural and hospital volunteer time and I am a veteran which they give points for starting this year. TEAS is 81% I think. Waitlist lucky #7.

Thanks so much. I want to get in so bad and knowing that many people got bumped up last year is a huge comfort. There's almost no chance that you won't get in. Congrats. :)
