SFSU FALL 2019 BSN

Published

Hello everyone! I am a fellow pre-nursing student ar SFSU trying to apply for Fall 2019.

This post seems quite early since we are still trying to submit everything by January but I thought it would be good to start this now rather than later!

You guys can comment your stats down below!

Mine are

GPA: 4.0

Prereq GPA: 4.0

TEAS: 80.7

200 hours of volunteering (combined) at 2 different hospitals (SFGH and UCSF)

800+ hours of working as a CNA in a skilled nursing facility and rehab center

I currently a Certified Nursing Assistant

I am bilingual, proficient in Tagalog and English

No multicultural work/volunteer

My TEAS score isn't as competitive as I want it to be but hopefully my other assets would make up for it!

Hi guys! I'm currently in SFSU's BSN Program this Spring 2019! I'm on my first semester and if anyone has questions or concerns, I would be willing to help! (I was in your shoes too last semester ;) )

Hi! Thanks for being willing to help out ? I was wondering if we should bring anything with us to the interviews? Like if they would want to see our resumes and things of that sort? Also, what do you think of the program so far in the academic & social aspects?

Hello! Aww of course!! I was in your guys' shoes last semester and the whole process of trying to get in a program was just nerve-wracking! ? Okay, so for the interviews, you don't need to bring anything other than yourself lol (and wear business attire). As for the program, I really like it! What I love about SFSU's nursing program is that there's always a lot of exposure and opportunities to learn, like doing lots of community service within the city (SFSU is known for this) and being in great well-known hospitals for the clinical rotations! Overall, it's really a humbling experience being in this program. Good luck to all of you!!

Hi! I have to ask: if given the opportunity to matriculate at another Bay Area school (CSUEB, USF, etc), would you recommend SFSU's program over others? All other things being equal, of course. I ask this because I've heard through the grapevine that SFSU's program is somewhat disorganized and painful to go through, program delays due to not enough classes for nursing students, etc., but I'd really love a second opinion.

I interviewed at SFSU yesterday, and was also impressed. Not just with the faculty, but also with those whom I interviewed with! A very neat cross-section of young, older, health care experience, not-so-much, etc.

Hi! level 3 BSN here and congratulations on getting this far in your nursing journey! As for the concerns of the program, there are some occurrences of disorganization happening (from what I've seen mainly with scheduling and last minute professors) but this is true of all programs to an extent. But all of this has been resolved and never deeply impacts our learning. We went to clinicals with no delays and our professors are seasoned educators who place students first. There are always spots and classes available for the nursing students, so rest assured you'll always have a seat! As mentioned above, SFSU has many weekly volunteering opportunities in the city and surrounding bay area doing many tasks (health screens/clinics, education, fundraising, flu shots, etc) with many patient populations. One thing I do like about our program is the diversity of our student body. We really do get everyone from all backgrounds and all ages so it brings so much to the classroom. SFSU is well-known for an active student body and nurses recognize this and appreciate what we do in clinical, in community, and in patient care. I also appreciate how everyone is vetted through the interviews and everyone in the cohort lifts each other up (nursing school is tough!). There are no more "A-list" personalities that you might encounter in pre-nursing, but everyone you go to class with is truly amazing, friendly, intelligent, and are there for the same reason as you. So you can be rest assured you'll have a whole group of supporters and friends. I hope this helps alleviates your fear about our program. I am happy to answer questions, good luck!

Here's a question to those who are already in the program: How manageable is the workload? Would you recommend not working while attending the program, or cutting back on hours? I am currently working 30 hours a week, and was planning on cutting back on hours, but I wanted a second opinion on how much I should cut back, if at all. Thanks!

Thanks much for the guidance. It's much appreciated! I'm waitlisted so we'll see how it goes, but no matter what best of luck to all of you!

It depends on each person and what you find comfortable/reasonable. I definitely think working and going to nursing school is doable! Alot of us work part time while attending classes. I work about 8-16 hrs a week and it feels manageable. ?
