I will be graduating from nursing school in December of this year so I have begun to apply to different positions at different hospitals. I have applied through the various hospitals online application system. I was thinking that I could go ahead and mail in a hard copy of a cover letter and resume in addition to my online application, and that maybe that might give me a good advantage. What do you think? Do you think it's appropriate in this situation considering they don't ask for resumes?

I've heard rather than mailing, you should actually take it to the floor and try to meet the nurse manager.
I also graduate in December and am planning on doing this, haven't had time yet.
Good luck!

Yep, I would do that! It certainly can't hurt and can only help your chances. Good luck!

I've never seen an online application that didn't allow a resume and cover letter to be attached.
You definitely want to get both of those into their hands
