hello everyone, i'm an RN who graduated last may with no luck finding jobs. i have an ADN and no hospitals want to hire me. they prefer BSN over ADN and atleast one year experience. so, i've heard of 1199seiu during my nursing school, and not really sure what it is. Is it like a staffing agency, or do they help you find nursing jobs?
SEIU is a service workers union not just healthcare....
True, but 1199 SEIU is specifically a healthcare workers' union. Specifically, they are "United Healthcare Workers East". : http://www.1199seiu.org/
1199SEIU is a workers union. They do not offer any type of employment search help as far as I know. They are also not just in the northeast, as some have boldly pointed out within this thread, but also as far south as Florida. I'm not sure about other states, but in NYS where I am a RN, they do represent us in the hospital that I am employed at and not just CNA's and LPN's.

Way one has heard it 1199 here in NYS has been very big in using it's politcal clout to get funds from Albany and other provisions to benefit their "members" in terms of finding work. In particular programs to train/educate CNAs,PCTs and others from the "service" side to become nurses or move say from housekeeping to patient care/UAP roles.
There was also a rumor making the rounds that during the Saint Vinny's crisis 1199 began or was able to move many members from that hospital to employment elsewhere before or shortly after the hospital closed. In short they "took care of their own".
Also, from the website I posted above:

As others have stated, 1199 SEIU is a Healthcare Workers' Union. They are in my state but they do not represent nurses here... we have a nurses' union for that.
