i just finised a nur102 class in nursing school.the class consisted of med surg, ob, & peds and i got a d. i will not be able to go on to the class that i need to graduate in july 2008 and will have to start over in january 2009.
i am second guessing my self right now and having a pitty party and not sure of what i want to do.the only thing that i am sure of is that i am confident of is that i want to be a nurse so i wanted to get some other people opinion of what i can/should do. should i go to summer school to take some classes to help me with my critical reading skills that will help with my reading in nursing or what. please help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
One of my teachers told me that I had alot of test anxiety & I don't know what 2 do about that. I noticed that w/OB&Peds the more repetition I had the better it was 4 me but it was so much info w/Med Surg it became overwhelming 4 me:(
Ahhh...I had the same problem in the beginning with test anxiety, until I figured out what worked for me in regards to study habits, etc. Once you nail that first 90% on a test, that anxiety magically goes away, because you will have discovered WHAT works best for you. :typing
I tried study groups (no help) and reading and re-reading the chapter(s) (which only gave me a headache or overwhelmed me with information).
Then I figured it out (for me, that is...)
"Every single question being asked on the exams deals with NURSING INTERVENTIONS." After that I studied nursing concerns (what to watch for and what to monitor) for each condition, rather than the condition itself!
I now write myself questions on flashcards concerning the nursing interventions for each condition rather than the "define this condition" questions I used to write.
Do you have to take the whole enchilada over again, or just the med-surg portion? I say pick yourself up off the ground, dust yourself off, and jump in again with both fists flying! That's what our folks would have done in their day.
Tothepointe is correct. Most CC's have Critical Thinking classes in their Philosophy department (and some in their English department.) it certainly would not hurt to take a night course on the subject (I did...)
A study skills class would seem advisable as well at this point, as you have probably been out of school for some time. I had been out for over 20 years when I went back for my LVN. Boy, was I rusty!
Do you do yoga or tai chi? That helped me to focus the night before the "big test."
Best of Luck,
Michael
P.S.
A little anxiety is good for test as it keeps you alert. If your test is on paper as soon as you get it write some of the most important memnonics (eg TEAM Together Everyone Acheives More) down on margins as well as formulas so you can refer to them later. Oh and never sit anywhere any known cheaters. They'll take you down with them and not think twice. Sad I even have to mention it =/
i understand what all of u r saying now i have another problem i was going to take 2 classes that will help me w/critical thinking & reading skills & since i got a "d" in my nsg class it dropped my gpa & i am not hable to take any classes w/o paying out of pocket & i am not able to do so because i don't have the money to pay for the classes
i have been praying so i hope he shows me the way
Can you buy the text book and self study. PM me I am more than willing to help you where I can. I may not be much help with nursing specific critical thinking but I am pretty good with general critical thinking and reading.
The reading concentrate on just reading as much as you can. Pushing yourself with harder texts keeping a dictionary in hand.
A failure is just that A failure one and does not have to lead to multiple failures unless you choose to. Sometimes one failure is a good thing as it keeps that fear of failure out of the way. It happened and yet your still standing.

When you catch yourself reading more into it than necessary, glance up and re-read. My instructors always told us to never answer more than the question is asking. If they wanted you to read more into the question and elaborate, it would be essay questions, not multiple choice. Also, the others are right, use your Saunders cd or whatever guide you choose to use. That should be a tremendous help for you. I used mine at least 30 minutes a day the last semester of school.
See if your college has classes or something along that line for test anxiety. I've been to 2 community colleges in 2 states and both had a 4 hour session on test anxiety and how to avoid it. Talk with a school counselor and they should be able to lead you in the right direction. Best of luck to you.
