It's really up to the individual. Being a "good" RN is multifactorial but what really sets RNs apart from the rest of the healthcare team is the compassion and the care given to the patients. I also think that this is also the reason why most Filipinos excel in the nursing field. Skills and knowledge can be gained and learned overtime but the compassion and caring factor is innate to each individual, esp. to Filipinos.

It depends what is your motive when you took nursing as second course. Are you caring and norturing?Remember there is a high percentage of burn out nurses.Nursing is not an easy job.

It depends on the kind of person you are and your intentions......

it doesn't matter if ur 2nd courser or not as long as ur dedicated to your work.

Nursing is an entirely different field I think. A previous degree doesn't necessarily guarantee one of being a good RN. Sure that units earned and work experience not related to nursing could be of great help, also the fact that they are now more serious to learn and life experiences makes them more driven but still, nursing is a skill that needs years of practice and dedication to master. No matter how long you've been in another profession, when you choose to embrace nursing just now, that still makes you a rookie. That's why I have high respect for all those who've been in the nursing profession for so long already.

Hi! I'm a Nurse in Ph and it is my second degree. Based on what I have seen and observed with others who took Nursing as a second degree...these people got a lot of heart and compassion as most of them had aged well..not so old but more mature individuals who knows how to give a lot to their patients. When we had undergone all our hospital duties and hands on patient care experiences...you will really love nursing especially in the Philippines - Manila and other provinces there. These are patients who are in most need and no human being will not be moved to show compassion and their best caring selves when exposed to such situations and cases. So it's not a matter of who's best- the first ones who took Nursing as first course OR the second coursers ( as how they call them). Imagine all the hardship these not so young set had taken to graduate and finish Nursing :) - wearing the all white school uniform when their waistline are not as small as the petite ones anymore, wearing black and white uniform shoes, community uniforms, defended the thesis and lots lots of individual and group projects; rode the Phil. jeepneys of Manila and had taken the risk for their lives to finish all shift duties esp. at night. I agree with RN062006 - dedication counts! I respect all people, every person for their aspirations and life endeavors without discrimination when they decided to go for it. God knows who these people are.

I enjoyed reading your post. It also gave me a chuckle. especially the part about the crispy pata waistlines!:)

PS...My wife is a second-courser, and she's a good :nurse: too.

this question/statement would be better asked to senior nurses who had experienced working with second-coursers-nurses.... but to add, second coursers especially those who already are mothers had the potential to be good nurses because of their experiences in caring for their child/children...:)

I'm a second courser too.

For me, it really depends on the person.

One can really be mature in his/her own way

But some can also be hard headed. It's just that

Second coursers know how to equally respect others

Students these days are so empowered that they

Already losing respect for others. (not all but some)

First course, second course, third course, fourth course, etc...

It doesn't really matter, because it still depends on the person who is practicing it.

Specializes in Medical-Surgical/Infection Control.

second courses = older = more mature and responsible (in most cases) & less "barkada and let's go to a party and not study at all attitude"

so in theory, it sounds like a pretty valid arguement. though at the end of the line it really depends on the student's own attitude and study ethic.
