Second courser needs help

Published

Hi i'm new here. I'd appreciate any advice/suggestions you can give me, i'm in a real bind here. Here's my situation

I graduated from college last march 2007. For various reasons, I decided that i would re-enroll as a second courser in nursing for the school year 2008-2009. Last May, i planned ahead and had my transcript evaluated at the same university that i had graduated from previously. The dean of nursing told me that because i had already done almost all the minor subjects, it would take only 3 years for me to graduate and that I would start off the next school year as a Second year student. I also asked her and the admissions office if there was going to be another year added in the college of nursing for the next school year and they no. So I took what she said as reassurance and went off to make the most of the degree that i have.

After awhile I realized it would be much better if I enrolled for the second semester of 2007 instead of the first semester of 2008. So i revisit the dean earlier this month (august) and then she drops the bomb. Apparently CHED has released a new curriculum that is effective sy 2008 onward that, although not yet finalized, is "as good as implemented." This new curriculum not only sets me back another year (making it take another 4 years for me to graduate again)but because of one subject that's only available in the first semester, sends me back to start at First Year instead of Second along with more than 12 new units and hundreds of more hours.

Does anyone know if this new curriculum will really be implemented for the next school year? Has it been officially announced?

Are there any schools in manila/davao at all that will allow me to graduate with a BSN in 3 years or below starting 2008?

Will there be any "second courser friendly" schools left after 2007?

please any advice will be useful. I'm in a tough situation right now for personal reasons and this new curriculum, if it effectively sets me back one more year, could ruin everything for me. Any help will be greatly appreciated...thanks

i responded to your thread on the very same topic. please look for the answer there. even as a naturalized citizen in the us, that is for immigration purposes, for licensure you are always going to be considered a foreign nurse for whereever you wish to get licensed and work. you are always going to have to follow the extra procedures that are required.

this means that every time you apply for licensure at a different state. you are going to have to get the request from the state board you are applying a license at and mail it to your nursing school in the philippines. usually whatever they request for, like transcripts of records and maybe rle experience etc. we all know how long that will take before they mail the results back to the state you are applying in right? (sometimes the state will not take the transcript that you brought in but will only take that was mailed from the school itself.)

i should know. at one point, i was licensed in three states. i hope this helps you.

Try Philppine Women's University (PWU). They offer a great program specifically tailored for 2nd coursers. During our times, they have a 2-year program for 2nd coursers regardless of your previous course. Be reminded though that you need to be a full-time student. so if you are working and you think you can' quit your job, then this is not for you. But if you are really ready to do some serious studying for two years, then this is the school for you. Another good thing about this school is they do not manipulate the hours required for your clinical exposure. They will really see to it that before you graduate and finish the course that you have already finished and completed the number of clinical exposure required in the nursing curriculum approved and mandated by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) for a BSN course in the country.

And take note also of the fact they operate on trimestral basis that's why the entire program duration seemed to be rather short. But it is really the pacing that is fast.

For my two cents now, regardless of the bad news others might say regarding the practice of nursing in our country, I firmly believe that our country is still the best, and will still be the best producer of nurses worldwide. Why? Remember TLC? =) It is innate in us and only us can genuinely give this to the patients. It is the Filipino values of being humble, patience, perseverance and compassionate that will pull us through amidst the trials the nursing profession is facing now in our country.

there are many "fly-by-night" schools everywhere. even in davao. but i guess the quality of education is poor. almost zero hospital affiliations. i suggest you go to a good accredited school and get the best training possible. your future patients deserve only the best from you as a nurse. as they say, nursing is a calling.

hi xasdas - 2nd courser here and I should say that I wont agree with the poster who said you must be prepared mentally, physically and all that. the better aspect should be flexibility and adaptability and you dont have to love nursing when you start taking it up, you'll learn to love it eventually, a lot of people you'll meet in nursing school will probably tell you that -

Also, you just graduated last year and for a guy like you who just graduated, all you think about is work and how to find one(that pays a decent salary - if you could find one here in the Philippines) - but when you already find a job and things still dont fit the puzzle or workout after a year or so - you'll end up rethinking your options...that was me 2 years ago. What I did before I decided that I should be going to take up nursing was research a lot...these researches gave me a deeper insight as to what nursing could be in the future thus influencing my decision to take up nursing. I even influenced my classmate to go with me when I showed him some websites of my researches

Another piece of advice i would also give to you is not to go to schools who give out diplomas as fast as 5 minute ID pictures, its not worth it...go to the top schools of the Philippines who accept second coursers...other wise it will be just another waste of time...well maybe unless ur a doctor you can just go to some instant nursing schools where you just add hot water to a piece of paper wait, and poof there comes a diploma...if not, better come to my school or a similar school which is a Center of Excellence for Nursing Ed

Good Luck!
