Seattle U - APNI 2012

Nursing Students NP Students

Anyone already applying at Seattle U? Which track? I haven't finished my pre-req's, so I am probably not too competitive this year, but I am going to apply anyway. I am applying for the nurse-midwife track and my background is Microbiology (UW).

Cool, my great grandparents were portuguese too, but from mainland. They were Mendonças and Peixotos. My maiden name was so common too!

Yeah, you'd love Hawaii then. There's tons of Portuguese here and linguica and beans everywhere. There's also malasada trucks too. Do they have a Portuguese food in Seattle or linguica at the market?

OMG, I know I will love malasadas. In Brazil we have something very similar (or identical) and it reminds me of my childhood.

I think there's a spanish market in Seattle that sells portuguese food and you can also find some portuguese food online and in Brazilian stores here in Seattle. They sell linguiça at Safeway, Fred Meyer, etc, but they also sell frozen linguiça at the Brazilian market. I'm also able to buy salted cod at many regular grocery stores, you just need to ask for it at the counter.

There is a small restaurant close to where I live whose chef is Portuguese and although she makes a lot of indian dishes (I can't eat her Indian though, too spicy for me!) she does make a pastel de nata that is to die for.

Other than that, I make Cozido Português at home and other things. You will have better luck if you look for things at the Brazilian restaurants and markets.

But malasadas, mmmmmmm!

Lenin, I am curious what your background is? Have you done much service/outreach? Stellar grades? What do you think has helped you stand out during the admissions process :-)

I would say that I am a really good match for the school's mission and values statement. It is exactly what I'm looking for in a school. The faculty are inspirational, I want to be a leader in nursing, I want to do research and educate in the future, I want to and have experience working with under-served populations, and I have some international experience. After undergrad, I didn't get a "real" job--I've just done research & volunteering. The choice to do that led me to experience some tough times which were really important for personal growth, and I reflected on that in my interview as well. I have a buddy in the program now and it's just so, so ridiculous intense, and (I think) they want to make sure you've had other crazy experiences so that you have an inkling (and only an inkling! I dn't think you can know how tough it really is til you're in it!) of what you're in for. Also, I love the profession of nursing! It's really, really important to me that I become a nurse! RN are, after all, the first two letters after your name.

Thanks for sharing your story, sounds like you and SU are truly a great match!

So I've been on a motown kick lately and this is the first song on my playlist, which is currently quite fitting. The Marvelettes know what's up. For your enjoyment and distraction:

Just belt it out...

Called Graduate Admissions this morning and they said that we should all hear by the end of next week as all decisions are being mailed out over the course of this week. I think we have heard this from other posters too, just wanted to give the most recent update.

She also said the mailing is based more on the Nursing Department sending them decisions than on speecific specialties.

Still obsessively checking the mail!

Woah. Just got the official email from Janet Shandley about my acceptance. eeeeeeekk!

congrats andar!! so exciting!! thank goodness they are sending e-mails. wahoooo

I just received that email too!

I GOT IN TO FNP!!! Janet Shandley sent me an e-mail this morning also. I actually got 2. One that I think was sent to other FNPs but with just your first name changed and then a personal one since I had an address change recently and they weren't sure I would get the mail here in Hawaii before the deadline to give an answer (they are right, I probably won't see that letter for a while). Okay come on Calinca and Pooja! Board let's send positive energy their way. I really hope you two get in. I would love to spend the next 2 years commiserating over too much homework and not enough sleep!

I may go read the e-mail again. My brain hasn't processed it and I keep thinking it's sort of wonderful admissions error.

I may kiss him when he shows up and then do a happy jig
