Seattle U - APNI 2012

Published

Anyone already applying at Seattle U? Which track? I haven't finished my pre-req's, so I am probably not too competitive this year, but I am going to apply anyway. I am applying for the nurse-midwife track and my background is Microbiology (UW).

Christy-Awesome! I know what you mean, there is a generalist program here in chicago at Rush medical school but after going back and forth, I too decided that my passion is to be an NP. Hopefully you get into SU!

Just found out that my cousin lives in Renton, I know we were talking about it in here. How long is the commute to SU? Isn't there a clinical site in Renton? Flaneur, how is the parking at SU and clinical sites?

NursePrac, the Valley Medical Center is a major hospital in Renton. Someone said this is the clinical site for the OB rotation and for the CNM I think we will come back to that site once we are in our specialty - but I saw a resume of a SU alumni and on her second year she went to other hospitals as well, not just the Valley.

I've never driven from Renton to the SU during rush hour or vice-versa, so perhaps Cura or Lenin can said more about that. Cura said there is an alternative way that's better than I-5. I remember that I-5 North can be slow during rush hour, but there are so many lanes, it's not stop and go.

I'm also curious about the parking at SU. Do we get free parking at clinical sites? Valley's parking was free a long time ago but I am not sure if every hospital is like that, specially if we are talking about hospitals in Seattle. I never heard of free parking in Seattle hahaha. I think Overlake is paid for visitors, I am curious to know if we as students will have a free pass or not to park in those places.

Thanks Calinca!! Much to consider.

Finals week for me! Exam on monday, one on thursday and the last one on saturday. This is going to be a crazy week.

*1 week only, 1 week only, 1 week only...* :bowingpur

G'luck lady! Wish I only had a week left. Hopefully you'll have more to celebrate at the end of the week than just finals ;)

Thanks! Fingers crossed that we'll all have good news this week!

Business & Technology | New reality for nurses: Not easy to find a job | Seattle Times Newspaper

Gloomy headline in today's Seattle Times about nursing jobs in the local area.

Not exactly what I wanted to read when I am (perhaps) about to take out many tens of thousands of dollars in student loans.

Yeah, I also read that today! Not a great outlook...

hey, did any of you also apply to the SU BSN program? I did. I was just thinking if that would factor in to their decision for the masters. What do you think. I am rethinking if I'd even do the BSN program there....doesn't seem to be worth the $$$$! Seems better to get your aa and then go to a masters program, no? Anyway, what do you all think?

Cura, that is absolutely gut-wrenching to read right now. Unfortunately it's our reality at the moment. I encourage you not to be discouraged as almost EVERY job is hard to come by in this economy. I am considering the article in the following ways:

1) It seems to reflect the hardship of bedside RNs. I don't think NPs are readily considered when it comes to writing these kinds of articles so it's easy to throw yourself in the mix. However, it does affect us as we try to get experience as an RN after the first 15-months of the program, and perhaps if we have to remain RNs even following the MSN portion to get more experience. All that said, keep in mind, RNs and NPs are not the same. I read an article the other day about the promise of NPs.

2) A lot can happen in two years! We could graduate with perfect timing just as the economy starts to thrive again. When I read those articles, I think about "right now" how in the moment jobs are tough to come by, not just for nurses, but everyone. We can only move forward with our plans and hope that efforts to rebuild the economy remain at the forefront.

3) There's always medical school??? Truthfully, I've been considering it a lot lately. I don't know if anyone else has, but if the NP thing doesn't work out (in any way) I'm also taking the necessary steps toward being a physician.

Hope this helps a tad :)

I was intrigued by the article posted by Cura, and also appreciate the comments made by members of this forum. Thanks for sharing, as there is much to consider as we embark on NP careers!

On another note... I am eager to hear from SU this week! Hoping there are no unexpected delays and that this board will be alive with acceptance excitement at some point very soon :-)

someone should email and ask whenif we'll hear decisions this week
