Anyone already applying at Seattle U? Which track? I haven't finished my pre-req's, so I am probably not too competitive this year, but I am going to apply anyway. I am applying for the nurse-midwife track and my background is Microbiology (UW).
Flaneur,Stable situation huh? So it probably was a disadvantage that I went to my interview 7 months pregnant? lol I figured....I thought I did a complete job of explaining how I would overcome the challenges of having a newborn in the program but who knows. Thanks for all your input!
Hahah, that probably made you stand out! Nothing better for the admissions committee than to have something so memorable! :-) I'm sure if you had a solid plan about how you were going to overcome the challenges, they would be happy to work with you. Several of the people in my cohort are new(ish) parents. Many, many of them (I would say over a third) are parents.
....now that you are finishing your 3rd quarter as a student nurse - what's your weakness? Poop? Smells? Mucus? Blood? Vomit? Did you feel like passing out or getting sick during any of the clinicals?
Vomit. Once it's out, it's not so bad. But the combo of hearing/seeing/smelling it come out is rough for me. Thank god I'm not going to be doing much Peds!! Everything else is not so bad. Somehow the amazement of getting to do something for a patient that is advanced and totally "nursey", makes it easier to handle (ie, giving a 14mo toddler 5 immunizations...a breeze now)
Flaneur, thanks for your response. It's pretty cool that there are some guys in the program! I feel like most people on here are women, so it's good that there is some balance in the program itselfhaha, although I feel a little badly about those poor 20 percent of men...and how they deal with women's hormones! Lol! I'm applying for adult/gero and I feel like I tried to convey the things you mentioned. However, I guess with the rushed schedule and very specific questions, it was a little hard to say everything...but it's good to have an idea. I feel like I agree with you about the waitlist...everyone interviewed was obviously desirable to the admissions panel in some way...at that point i'm sure many of the interviewed people that didn't get spots would probably be waitlisted...at least I would hope!
Is there an honor society for nurses at the master's level? What other kinds of opportunities to travel abroad do you have in the APNI program? I remember at orientation someone mentioned that nurses can go along with Doctors Beyond Borders...that, is my dream if I get in...
Thanks, pooja! I have a special place for the AGNP track in my heart, as that will be my track. Funny thing is: you do everything together the first year, regardless of your track. Sometimes it's hard to remember who will be and who won't be with me next year. Kind of sad sometimes, as I've made amazing friendships.
I agree that many of the people who interviewed will likely get on the waitlist if they aren't initially offered a spot. And many of those people will ultimately be offered a spot.
There is an honor society for the master's level. I don't know much about it at the time, because I'm still in the first year. I know that it's a big mark to reach, because I assure you....B's are just fine in this program. Often, if you get a B, you're totally psyched, which can be a big change for perfectionists like many of us who are used to getting all or almost all A's.
Travel opportunities are honestly quiet limited during the APNI program, except for the midwifery track, which has a study abroad option well built into it's curriculum (in the Andes somewhere....Peru? Ecuador? Bolivia? I can't remember right now). Honestly, the program is sooooo jammed packed, that you really can't take much time off. Some people are planning to travel for the month between our Summer and Fall quarters (after becoming RNs) to do international work, but it's really on their own.
Flaneur, thanks for the detailed response. I don't know how you find the time to communicate with us via cyberspace while in the program but your effort is greatly appreciated.
It's procrastination studying for Peds and Psych finals. Ugh. This weekend is going to be loooong. :-)
Does anyone know where to find the academic schedule specific to the 2012-2013 APNI program?
There is a 4 week, an 8 week, and an Intersession listed for Summer 2012 in the general academic school calender.
Flaneur mentions a month between summer and fall quarters, so this suggests that classes don't occur during the Intersession.
Is this the same schedule for first and second year students, or is it specific to second year students upon completion of the NCLEX-RN exam?
My partner's employer has long lead times for requesting time off work. If there are breaks in the schedule that permit some shared time together it will help balance the school/life equation.

Is this what you're looking for?

Wow, i only signed off for a day and there's so much info that i got to catch up on! I guess I can't go much more than 24 hours without my lovely e-support group :). I've been having a really rough few weeks and it's pleasant to come on here and read about things that would be so exciting if we are to get into the program. It's a nice distraction, and it's awesome to see that everyone is so genuine and helpful.
