My plan B: keep working as an EMT and rack up my pt contacts, take pharm and pathophys online or at a CC to make it easier on myself when the time comes, get cert as a post-partum doula because the need (as I understand) is greater than for birth doulas. That said, I'm fairly confident I'll be accepted.

I totally hear what current students are saying about the drawbacks of the program, butttt, to echo what others are saying, that's nursing! that's school! That's LIFE. Shoreline CC is the other program I would consider, but when all's said and done, it takes almost 3 years to get your RN license, THEN you have to go back to your masters. Plus, with the new loan guidelines, I'm not too worried about the debt. Que sera, sera, y'all.

I think my plan B is actually going to be maybe a local community college that would get me my RN in less then 2 years. I try to think that the fact that I wouldn't have to take out loans for that program is a plus...and I could still work part-time. But then again, yes that means I would still have to do the Masters somewhere else, but I am so anxious to get started I am not sure I can wait another year and feel as though I am spinning my wheels. At least it would open up more options for masters programs, rather than limiting to these accelerated programs.

I hope it doesn't come to plan B though. However without knowing what type of competition I am up against, its really impossible to predict if I would even be picked for an interview!

It sounds as though more and more people are applying for the CNM program (at least from this board, it sounds as though that is even more popular than FNP)?

Anyone out there applying for FNP (that is my chosen track).

Oh and on the note of loans, a current graduate student told me something that I think is a bit of a downer. As of July 2012, graduate student loans will no longer be subsidized.

hehe, I think I might be in the minority, but my "plan b" is to go to another direct entry program. I applied to 6. Seattle U is definitely one of my top choices, though.

Oh luluj, that blows!

I still don't have a plan b. But I will probably delay getting my prereqs instead of cramming everything in the spring quarter. I will probably enjoy summer with my family, travel overseas, and finish decorating my house (we moved in august and everything is still a mess). I don't want to work in microbiology, and that will depend largely on childcare, but I want to find something pertinent that will give me exposure to people. Perhaps teaching.

myelin, how are your other apps going? That is so exciting to have potential options..I only applied to SU, and I'm trying to just focus on that before seriously planning my plan b. Calinca's plans to enjoy summer sound nice, I might do that too!

Myelin- do you mind listing the programs you applied to? I had a rather difficult time finding programs (well, I guess finding ones on the west coast). I am curious if there are some that I missed or overlooked, and would love some more options to research.

Sure! So I was accepted to Columbia, early decision - but I didn't put my deposit down because I decided the program isn't right for me. I also applied to OHSU (they only offer psych and midwifery for direct entry), UCSF, University of Pennsylvania, Boston College, and Seattle U. I interviewed at UCSF and UPenn. I am waiting to hear back from OHSU and Seattle U regarding interviews, I'm also waiting to hear if I've been admitted to Boston College... so I'm basically waiting to hear back from 5 programs, now, either about acceptances or if I'm offered an interview. This waiting game is harder than I anticipated!

There are other programs, as well. I believe University of Rochester, John Hopkins, Yale, Ohio State, University of Illinois - Chicago, University of Hawaii, and MGH institute all have direct entry nurse practitioner programs. There are more, you just have to look for them.
