SDSU FALL 2021 BSN

Published

Hey guys! I am creating this for Fall 2021 SDSU nursing applicants. We can make this a place where we can share our stats and answer any questions! My stats are:

Cumulative GPA: 4.0

Pre-reqs GPA: 4.0

TEAS: 82

I have work experience

I have 67 points, I'm kinda nervous, my TEAS isn't that good ?

I guess I’ll explain my thinking, even though I’m probably not in a similar situation ? (I personally don’t like the LA area, from my experience of it.)

I had to decide between SJSU, CSUSM, and SDSU as a 2nd bachelor CA-resident applicant. (That being said, at SDSU I’m not required to do GEs or the international experience requirement. Just nursing classes.)

One factor was cost: I live within commute distance to SJSU, so that would be the cheapest. SDSU tuition is the same, but I would have to move there and pay for housing. CSUSM is double the cost for tuition AND I would have to pay for housing. I kind of want to move anyway though. (I actually ended up not finishing my app to SJSU, even though I would’ve been accepted given my stats, cuz the application process and school admin themselves seemed so disorganized and confusing. It didn’t give me trust or enthusiasm in the program.)

Another factor was clinical locations: I don’t know what hospitals/etc SJSU is partnered with. SDSU is partnered with a lot of well-known hospitals in a relatively small radius (so commute time will be good). CSUSM partners with hospitals as far north as Riverside county and south as SD county (so commute time could be bad). I know for certain there are a lot of good job opportunities in SD too.

Another factor is location: I have friends in SD cuz I did my undergrad at a school down there. That means I can share housing with them for lower rent and for more social time. It also means I will live in an area I already know I like. The bus/trolley system is also GREAT down there, so not having a car to myself won’t be too big a problem (ie I can bus or have a friend chauffeur me).

Another factor is length: Though CSUSM would be fastest at 2 years, it would require summers (which I wanted to work during). SDSU is technically the longest at 3 years (no summers), but you have the option to accelerate it by one semester if you get approval (due to good grades your first year). I didn’t see a one semester difference as being really significant anyway (between 2.5-yr SJSU and 3-yr SDSU).

Other things I liked about SD were how response and helpful the advisors were, that there is opportunity to do two semesters of preceptorship, the campus, the ‘track’ class system, the clarity of applying / student portal things, the class schedule, and the age group (since there will likely be people close to or exactly my age). I’m 1000% not a party person, but I still like that the school seems social and has lots of clubs and sports. I don’t think it will be hard to make friends there.

I think that’s basically everything! Sorry for long response. I hope something here helped.

tl;Dr - I chose SDSU b/c location (and therefore distance to friends, clinicals, and fun), reliable and good academics, cohort age, and cost.

Thank you so much for the lengthy response, I genuinely really appreciate it! For me, there are a lot of factors as well. I have more family in the LB area, including my sister. I will be a commuter either way so living in dorms/ going to a commuter/ non-commuter school doesn't really matter to me. I really wish I could've gone and visited the campuses. LB has a higher NCLEX pass rate than SDSU but they're both great programs and it really does depend on the student. I also got into SJSU but I didn't really want to go because I wanted to move to Southern California regardless. It would be either 1.5 or 2.5 years at CSULB compared to 3 at SDSU which isn't much of a difference. I don't really know anyone at either. Both have good relationships/ agreements with nearby hospitals. I am losing my mind! Did you apply to CSULB?

It sounds like you have a hard choice in the coming days XD But I don’t think you can really go wrong either way tbh, since they’re both good programs and good schools in good areas. It would probably be nice to have family in the immediate area of school. And you probably have a better idea of what that area’s like because they live there, which is helpful. Definitely check out Youtube campus tours and student vlogs and whatnot.

And no, I didn’t apply to CSULB. I’m not really familiar with that area and wasn’t interested in living too close to LA, cuz of traffic and not having a car. xP I know people admire the school and nursing program, but I haven’t done any research yet to know why.

Btw is anyone interested in a discord server to chat about stuff? It seems like there are only like three accepted people in here so the forum’s kind of dead, but I’d be down to make/join some kind of group chat if anyone’s interested

If anyone is interested, private message me and I can send you the server invite! (cuz I think that posting the link here in this thread violates the allnurses terms of service and the link will get taken down...)

It occurred to me that people can't private message unless they have 15 posts, so LOL I guess just post here if you're interested

Has anyone who accepted the waitlist heard back yet? June 1st is coming up soon and I'm getting nervous... ?

There’s a link to the nursing class of 2024 server - it was posted a while back in this fb group: https://m.facebook.com/groups/2422995107993874
